Need auto box advice please.
Hey, recently purchased a discovery 3 that has a few problems which I will have to work through but top of the list of the auto box.
It goes into gear okay and select p,n and d fine and when you change from each one it come up on the cluster which one has been selected...but the D is constantly lit up red and doesn't change.
Also, when you push over to semi auto nothing changes at all. Nothing on the dash and no selection of gears just standard auto.
When in auto it works relatively fine but I can see the revs surging as I try to keep a constant speed?
I had it in at an indie today and he thinks it's a problem with the wiring to the gear select module?
Has anyone experienced something similar and is it easy to access the loom for this so I can check for any damaged, loose and wet wiring?
Thanks in advance

I'd start at the gear linkage. This could be a very quick and cheap fix.

Hey Robbie, the indie said the linkage was nearly hanging off which they adjusted and it selects gears so much better.
I think it's electrical though?
I took the centre console out lastnight to check connections under there and for coffee spillage but all seemed okay on the face of things...
Is there any places where you would suggest checking wiring?
Thanks

I've just spotted a thread with very similar issues to mine and his was fixed but checking wiring on passenger side loom. Purple/yellow wire?
I'm crossing my fingers that this is the problem but won't find out till tomorrow morning.

The adjustment of the linkage has to be just right, so even with the new smoothness it may not be indexing correctly.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I don't know adjustment it might need. I can really trust the indie that adjusted it i guess to make sure it's okay....will maybe have a word with him again.
Just had the battery out and the transfer case module was pretty corroded on the terminals so hoped that was the problem but after getting both side a good clean and putting back together there is no change.
Could the transfer case module be damaged? What would it's symptoms be if it was do you know Robbie?
Have opened up the wiring on the passenger side fill to see for bad connections or chafing but nothing really a miss?
Do you know whicolour wire would be the problem if it were the case? I read a thread that said purple/yellow for someone that had a similar issue but I don't see a purple/yellow wire in the loom?
The linkage will only do PRND. Inside the selector mechanism there are a few hall sensors which detect when the lever is moved across to Sport/Manual and then when you Tip+/-. If it's not doing anything when moving across to S/M it wont recognise the manual shifts as logically you cannot engage manual mode unless you're already in Sport.
I'd suggest looking for a replacement shifter mechanism as that seems the most likely culprit. It's not got any software in it so it doesn't need programming or configuring to match the car. It will need to have the cable adjustment done.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

I think you could be right. I would make sense that a sensor inside the selector has gone as I can select , P,N,R and D okay but nowt happens apart from that.
Out of interest, the top cover on the selector which has the illuminated letters....does that have any sensors in? Could that be damaged by fluids and effect the brain from know I want to select sport mode? Or is it purely decorative so to speak?
