Just seen this on D5 forum, might make you think again
Unfortunately, I am sad to report my balance shafts need to be replaced under warranty. This seems to be a common issue with the DS. After searching on this forum and Disco5forum I cant find any others suffering the same problem. FML

Is there any proof that a 3L V6 diesel HAS ACTUALLY suffered oil dilution?
Please come forward and give us real evidence if you have suffered this issue. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Dont think anyone can prove that Andrew as I dont think anyone has had oil sampled/tested by a specialist.
I have had the early service warning come up and had the oi/filterl changed under warranty. They reported the supposed oil dilution level at the time, cannot rember what it was but they did give a figure MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Dieselranger on the D5 forum has had his oil tested and I am sure some-else did as well.

If I was going back to a D5 it would be the 2.0 without doubt. The constant service warnings is the reason I no longer have it. 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I have the 3l D5 and its great - definitely feels more nimble than the d4 probably as punchy, but despite having already done 800miles its still not broken in!
Towing did feel less effort than the d4 and the d4 was great, all i noticed is a little more hitch noise than the d4
I am sure in the manual it says the 2l has a lower tow weight.
Anyway, every manufacture will have some issues, engines are complex. It wouldnt/doesnt worry me at all and after-all, thats what warranties are for - if it breaks, it will get repaired and i will have a car in the gap - doesnt bother me at all, even if it is a little annoying. LR will pick up the car and drop you a new one and ferry you around until the new one is there, so again no biggie in the grand scheme of things and nothing different to any other manufacturer.
Regarding ICE being dead...ill worry about that in 20+yrs, how many 20yr old cars do you see on the roads. Not that i think ICE is actually dead or that it ever will be. Mike

The 2.0 240 tows the same 3500kg but some markets get a 2.0 180 which has a lower towing weight. Not sure on the 2.0 petrol. 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

So why are the words Oil Dilution being used all the time when is not? In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I tow lots too.
I’m fairly certain it stuffs up this service interval thing.
Also the trailer has snaked a fair bit (never ever did this happen with my D4).
So overall I would stick with your D4.
My D5 was not worth spending 62K on. I’ve made a VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE.
