Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but most threads seem to focus on D3s.
I’ve got a MY12 D4 and the tailgate won’t open at all - there is just a faint click of you use for fob or the switch on the door. I’m guessing it’s the actuator.
So, does anyone knows of an easy way to open the tailgate and/or replace the actuator in a D4? Is it basically the same as the D3?
Any/all advice welcome before I phone the local Indy and get them to fix it...
Cheers
Mike

Grand, thanks for the confirmation.
I’ve had the D4 for 6 months and it’s nice that it’s keeping me in my toes in the same way that my MY09 Defender did before it.

Just as an aside I have had the fun of both the upper tailgate latch and the actuator fail on me this week. Have to say that trying to release the tailgate with the latch refusing to spring open when I pulled the cable manually was a slightly disconcerting moment.

Mine was intermittent and like you by messing around with various buttons stopping and starting the vehicle I could get it open on the occasions it didn't function properly. I replaced the lower tailgate actuator and has been perfect ever since. Part was about £40 ish and took about an hour to do.
Link below for a video on how to get in if its failed completely as well as showing how to fit the new actuator.

James,
First check the switch in the upper tailgate handle - mine was corroded and stopped making a good circuit. Using the buttons on the remote did release the tailgate so sounds similar to your fault. It can be gently prised out the handle and the replacement part is very cheap.
If that looks ok then most likely it is the actuator. I got one from Hunters using their ebay as I wanted a genuine LR part but many suppliers are out there. The part is actually a Ford one when you get inside it. Swapping it is a pretty simple task.
