Parking brake opperation
Hi,
Don't know if it's just me on this, when I engage my parking brake, say in traffic or waiting at lights, sometimes it holds the car perfectly, then other times and this is the more common occurrence, after putting the brake on and taking off the foot brake after a few seconds waiting, the car still moves forwards as soon as i remove my foot, sometimes for a few feet, then as if there is a groove in the drum for the brake it suddenly stops.
Now just to be clear i'm completely stopped before i use the brake and I wait a few seconds at least until taking my foot of the brake.
Is this normal??Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.

Not sure if it’s normal but it happens to me also, sometimes holds perfectly, sometimes creeps forward a foot before then holding.....

Not good should hold firm as soon as it engages, either needs adjusting, or has a fault like a seized operating arm on a shoe and has worn the friction material off so really needs full strip and inspection then repairs if necessary and then adjusting correctly.

No it is not normal - some brake serviceing is required.

Im sure I read if you hold the epb switch up slightly longer you get more handbrake power?

lyannall: No. You refer to the emergency braking function, which only applies if you hold the button up while the car is moving. Thou shalt not use the epb to stop the vehicle, only in an emergency.
Did you guys really only pull the lever, when the car was stood still, or did you pull a little moment before?
It's an old boring stupid manually adjusted drum brake operated by cables which in turn are operated by an electric drive.
If the epb is being applied only in standstill, basically, there should not be any lining wearing off. So, no dirt no need for big maintenance etc.
If the brake is being applied on the move, lining will wear off due to friction, durst will collect, etc. Welcome to the 1960ies. Your rear brake maintenance interval now is down to 5000 km.
I really do wonder where the myths emerged. Just because it's electrically operated, the drum brake part doesn't magically heal itself or adjust by sheer willpower and a good night's sleep.
Get your parking brake serviced a.s.a.p. Still you haven't reached the point where the electric drive fails due to blocked cables. The cables cost dearly, the drive will make you cry.
Unfortunately, manufacturers' maintenance schdules seem to only foresee the correct use of the Park brake, so the standard maintenance seemingly doesn't include too much of TLC for the drum brake. Hence the bad state in lots of cases.

May be nearing the end of its adjustment. If you reapply it again, it usually will try to tighten up again.

So apply the brake then once it’s on pull the leaver up again? Or disengage then apply again?Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.

Mine did this shortly before squealing and needing replaced. Slightly hacked off as it was replaced under warranty by LR a couple of months after getting the car (4+ years ago) and again a couple of months ago.
Second replacement was paid for by Warranty Direct, but I don't think that the unit should need changing every 3 or so years.
Anyway - get it checked out sooner rather than later.

Ah, and thanks BODSY for handing down your wisdom nicely compiled, but not engraved in stone, yet still called "the brake bible".
Jubbly: just downlaoad and flick through the bible. It will help, even if you decide not to do the deed yourself.

Adjusted now and working as expected, Had to change front discs as they were badly worn and thought i'd check these at the same time as I'd got the car on the ramp.
They had been behaving lately anyway but needed about two full turns either side, did panic a bit to start as wouldn't turn much, but then figured out that was the start of adjustment, so there couldn't be an awful amount of wear.Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.

My D4 suddenly started creeping forward with the park brake on a couple of months ago. I was actually on the way to the dealer for some other work so reported it but nothing was done. Reported it again at the service a month later - system cleaned and reset for £75 and reported working fine.
It’s not though, still doing the same thing. Rollls forward a couple of feet the lurches to a halt as the brake engages. The warranty runs out tomorrow and the dealer has said that as they haven’t faulted it there is no cover after tomorrow unless I pay for another warranty. He initially said it was normal behaviour until he consulted a mechanic - Even then he kept trying to say it wouldn’t hold against drive. It does though - eventually.
I’m going to be extremely unhappy if I end up having to shell out for a new actuator when it was reported twice under warranty. Although LR approved its through another company so not sure how they will view it. Joy.

Quick question on the park brake - do you need to press the foot brake as well as the park brake switch. I get an amber message if I don’t. The dealer said this was normal but I don’t remember it doing it before the creeping problem started!
