When I first bought my disco 2, I took it for a pre mot test at a lr specialist.
A list as long as my arm came back, including both front upper and lower ball joints failed..
They costed the work at £600 per side.
7 years later, I still haven’t replaced them, and they’ve never been mentioned on any MOT.

Things they’ve missed so far (last December) on my D3:
- seized caliper piston. The guy said “left side brakes with a little less force than the right, still well within guidelines”
- rear lower carrier arms bushes shot, clunking
Things they noticed:
- one of the rear license plate lights dark
If the brake were within spec as he said then the maintenance is down to the owner
If he cant see or fell any movement then its a pass
Rear numbe rplate lights are no longer a fail in the UK
We get seized/seizing callipers all the time son the trucks they will pass on bind amd effort but spin it by hand and you can tell its not quite right, bu tthe machine says all good

There will be some rust on the sills somewhere

Pete K wrote:problem is on certain brands of bulbs, when they are 10 years old, the orange paint cracks and then the bits start to flake off.
It's then no longer orange and if disturbed will be white!
I change dozens of the crappy orange bulbs monthly, practially every mot prep will involve at least a couple of bulbs, yes im fussy but I hate lazy gits who think white indicators are okay.
I would be amazed if they lasted 10yrs on a truck, 12 maybe 24 months at the best.
Orange bulbs have got to be one of the most stupid ideas ever.

Im sure he didnt say it was worn just for fun, something must have caught his eye/ear?
But did it pass?

On my Disco 2 a few years ago... I was advised that my headlight aim was high.
I simply turned the height adjustment dial on the dashboard and voila..... problem solved
MOT tester was a little embarrassed
SP Mods so far:
New wheel winch
Instrument upgrade (clock on dash)
D4 fascia + Garmin nuvi
LED side light, interior etc
New FL2 rear wheel arch seals

But did it pass? Yes it passed,no I do not think he said it for fun but he may have said it to obtain work that was not needed which in fact the work was not needed.Do you trust garages ?

Re: MOT Advisories. Really? |

Dieselconvert wrote:Was just wondering if anyone else has had joke advisories on a Discovery 3?
On the last MOT advisories were issued stating that rear offside seatbelt was twisted (6 year old daughter had left it facing the wrong way round. I turned it back so it was pointing the right way)
Rear seats were missing.(I showed the mechanic how to pop them up)
I have had other silly advisories along these lines, but the point is that these ridiculous pieces of advice are printed on the MOT for all to see if it were to come to selling.
I haven't had such daft advisories on any other make of vehicle I have owned so it makes me wonder if the average MOT guy just doesn't really understand Land rovers or the the disco?
Sorry, rant over
If I was looking at your advisories....
...I'd be more concerned about all the other ones than just the seat belt (which also says frayed)!!

Personally I’d be happy with an advisory like that. As it means it’s been through a REALLY anal tester.

I was really happy to get my Discovery and thought it was great to find a forum with other like minded people. Thanks Coo who I don't even know for ruining that!
