Does Expedition Rack need roof rails to be installed?

G'day everybody,

This is my first post but I had been lurking for a few months - awesome site.

I will be taking delivery of my Tdv6 SE in about two weeks and am busy working out all the accessories to buy. Mr. Green Mr. Green

I would like to get the expedition rack but I am getting conflicting information from the dealers. One said that I will also need to purchase the Roof Rails (not the cross rails but the ones that run longitudinally from front to rear) in order to fit the rack and another said the rack itself is complete and bolts straight to the roof of the vehicle.

Can some Expedition Rack owners confirm how the rack is actually fitted to the vehicle?

If the Roof Rails are required, does anybody know if the Rhino rails will fit? The Rhino rails are one quarter the price of LR's rails.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Eran,

I too am waiting on delivery of my Discovery - sometime around first week of February and I asked the same question. The answer I finally obtained is that the expedition rack bolts directly to the mounting points on the roof and does not require roof rails.

In the medium term I would also like an expedition rack but Oz price put it into the nice to have rather than must have for now.

In case it is of interest, I have also seen reference to people putting insulation under the front of the rack (to fill the space between the roof and the bottom of the rack) to minimise wind noise - though I have no idea whether this rack is any better or worse in this respect than other racks - it just looks as though it belongs on the Disco, unlike most after market versions...

Good luck with your new Disco.

all the best,

Andy

Hi Eran48,

I had a look in the GTR and it shows the roorails, but also shows brackets which gets fitted inside the roofrails. I would also be interested in the response from owners with this rack, to hear, but it seems it could be done.

My dealer told me I needed both, but at almost $3K for all, it definitely does not suite my needs.

Cheers,
Pierre

Thanks Piere for pointing me to the GTR website.

I managed to get the fitting instructions for the Expedition Rack and it does look like the Roof Rails ARE needed to fit the Expedition Rack. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

The rack is secured in three places along its length. The front most point is bolted to the front of the roof - the plastic trim needs to have a small hole drilled in order to fit the foot that the front of the rack bolts to.

The other two securing points (middle and rear of the rack) actually gets bolted to the Roof rails. Two metal plates with bolts running through them are slid into the rails and the rack is then rested on the roof rails and bolted up.

It looks like the rack actually sits on the Roof rails.

What I am wondering now is whether the middle and rear metal plates will fit the Rhino rails. These rails will fit the D3 nicely and only costs around $150. Compare this with $600 for the LR rails!! Shocked

If someone can tell me what the width of the LR Roof rails - (both total width and the width of the open gap), I'll check with Rhino Rack and we'll see if their roof rail is compatible with the Expedition Rack.

Andy, it looks like you have been given incorrect information?

It will still be good to have some OWNERS of the expedition rack to confirm all this.

Apparently, the roof rails were fitted as standard on some early models but Land Rover Australia got greedy and removed them from all the later models.

Cheers

I fitted the Rhino rails and they are fine.
I think the owner of the rights to Rhino in OZ
has a D3 so it was a priority to get them made in house

Norto,

Did you fit the Rhino roof rails with the Expedition Rack or just the roof rails?

I am comfortable that the Rhino roof rails will fit the D3 fine but am unsure if the Expedition rack will fit the Rhino rails.

Cheers

exped rack

I have my rack off at the moment; the comments above are spot on - you need the rails and they are supported at three points; I'm the only person who doesnt think its too noisy left on Rolling Eyes but it does reduce ability to park in my car park at work!! i measure the width of the LR rails as approx 3.5cm's with internal gap approx 1.8cm widening to 2.8cm at those points where the rack supports are designed to enter and then sldie along and be fixed. Make sense??

I'm the same - mine stays on. The balance is between the bother of getting it off, and the problem with finding a 2.10m car park in the centre of town.

On the bright side, the car park at SWMBO's work is 2.05m Very Happy No competition for the the D3 then! It's mine, all mine...... Twisted Evil

Thanks BlackPerth for the measurements. Clear as day. Thumbs Up

I'll pop in to a Rhino rack store this Saturday and check out their roof rail dimensions.

I'll get back to you guys then.

Cheers
