Beware of Lancaster insurance
Just sold my old Disco. I renewed with Lancaster three months ago for £169. I phoned them to cancel, having made no claims. They told me that I was not entitled to any refund whatsoever. Waffled about set up fees, cancellation fees, and my three months of cover. I am furious because I have absolved them of covering me against any accidents for the remaining nine months. What an absolute con, I will never use Lancaster again. 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

Do the policy t&cs say anything about refunds on a cancelled policy?

Totally depends on what terms you took out the insurance under. Many policies become non-refundable after very short periods. If you accepted a policy under certain cancellation terms then its only fair they apply those terms.

I heard they are furious that you sold your Land Rover 3 months after taking out their annual insurance

It's no use bleating about the Terms and Conditions that you were happy to accept only 3 months ago.

the small print is there to protect them as well as ... them.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...

But then I could be talking .. O
Criticism of Small Print (also known as the terms of the contract) is usually loudest from those who see a free (or cheap) lunch and don't want to know why until too late. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I can beat that.
I insured my motorbike and paid in full (only £100) only to change the bike 3 months later. I ended up paying £30 to cancel the policy. It would have been £55 to cancel, but they realised, when it was pointed out, that I had a nominal refund for the remaining unused 9 months.
Unable to reinsure with them for the new bike as the cost (pro rata) worked out at £500 against a market rate of £230.
It's about a third of what i paid this year!!!! So on that basis 3 months cover then leave is ok.
You could just suspend it and leave them with 9 months of admin to do on it..

you definitely don't want to do that. If the new owner has an accident and you had left the vehicle insured, your insurance co would be liable for half the settlement costs, affectiing your claims record, NCB etcNot such a Disco Newbie now!

This is something that happens surprisingly often, and a variation is where people opt to pay for their annual insurance in monthly instalments and get annoyed when they cancel the policy but need to keep up the repayments.
Before we buy a car we spend a lot of time looking at the details and considering the options to make sure we get exactly what we want - or as close to it as possible. Yet when we come to insure it, we sign on the line without looking too closely and then wonder why the product we've bought doesn't match our expectations.
Financial products aren't all that exciting compared to a shiny toy, which is why we don't give them the attention we ought.

Think you'll find Lancaster are a brokers and it will be the Insurers who set the terms for your policy, including any cancellation terms.

Not sure how that works, unless you have an any driver policy and even that is driving with your permission..==================================
