How much do you spend on Green Laning?
North Yorkshire Country Council have asked the GLASS rep to try to find out is much green laners contribute to the economy. Unfortunately, they want to know before 1st March so there's no time to do a proper study.
So, he wants to ask as many green laners as possible how much they estimate they spend per year going laning. This includes fuel, accomodation, food & drink, vehicle modifications and repairs etc.
If you can help the Rep with this question, I can pass on your answers to him.
Thanks.

Hi Barrie,
As you may be aware North Yorkshire County Council is currently trialling the handover of the management of unsealed unclassified roads from our Area Highways Teams to our Public Rights of Way Team.
One of the key advantages of this approach will be to provide a dedicated budget for programmed UUR maintenance rather than it having to compete with higher priority road works on an ad-hoc basis.
However the size of this budget is yet to be determined and I have been asked to prepare a report outlining the economic benefits of recreational green lane use by motor vehicles to inform the decision. While this subject would very much benefit from an independent study as I need to get this information to our senior managers by April this is not feasible.
Instead I am hoping that UUR user groups such as GLASS can help by providing an indication of how their members contribute to the local economy. Ways this might be could include:
· Purchase and maintenance of specialist vehicles at local garages
· Companies and organisations which organise paid guided trips
· Purchasing fuel, food and drink
· Overnight accommodation
I am also considering other benefits of green lane motoring such as:
· Access to the countryside for the disabled
· Volunteer activity to maintain green lanes both as a financial benefit to highway authorities and a social event for participants.
Any figures you can give me on these activities by your members in North Yorkshire would be much appreciated. Ideally totals over a twelve month period but any information you can give, even if anecdotal, would be useful. Ultimately the more information I have the more budget I will be able to get.
I appreciate it is a tight deadline but if you could let me have your response by 1st March that would be very useful.
Kind regards

Certainly my group of friends, who go Green Laning 3 times a year, all over the country, contribute a sizeable chunk of money to the local economy of wherever we go for our trips.
We usually take a 4 day trip, and will either camp in the summer months, or stay in local hotel in winter. We would eat in local restaurants, and also even when camping would try to do a deal to get our breakfast prepared in a local pub or restaurant.
As you can imagine, we don’t slack on the social side and will consume a decent quantity of local ale, we have been known to drink a pub dry! (Of drinkable ales)
Of course we buy supplies and fuel locally whilst there.
Our group is generally 5-7 vehicles, with upto 15 people on a well attended trip.
We don’t skimp on enjoyment, and our weekend bill excluding fuel would often be in excess of £2k We have a system where the club pays the bills, on one members credit card, then it’s divvied up to equal shares between attendees afterwards.
We go where we feel welcome. It’s not always 4x4 related, we do walking also. Last year we did the knoydart peninsula on foot, and contributed a very large sum to that area.
So if we feel welcome, we come. Sadly many areas are not making us feel welcome anymore. Large parts of Wales are no longer attractive from a green lane driving point of view. Brecon Beacons comes to mind. We used to have some very big trips in that area, but now the lanes are mostly gone, we go elsewhere.
Hope that helps you. Pm me for more details if you need to.

I’d say about 3 or 4 trips per year, each one at least £250 for me.There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.

we do 2 x 2 day trips a year, overnighting in hotel with a few refreshments, 8 people, 4 cars, probably £150 each per trip plus fuel and repairs/mods.
We also go mid week, out of seaon to avoid crowds, makes it far more enjoyable.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Surely you could include the price of the car?
I mean, you need a 4x4 to do it, so I would include that as well.

I think my most expensive day greenlaning came to about £550 inc fuel, repairs and stopping off for some food at the local pub. On average I guess I’m looking at about £200 a day.

Other end of the scale, I only spend the cost of fuel as never venture out of Kent.
I would bet most laners are along the same lines spend wise, taking flask and sarnies with them.

Look at the Scottish Green Road Club website - they organise trips on private land, usually Scottish Water or Forestry Commission.
