Rebuilding a Disco 4 2012

Hi all!

As a new user on the forum, i have a newbie question. 2 weeks ago I bought a 2012 Discovery 4 with 99000 km on the clock with a seized engine. After a strip-down, the bearings on the crankshaft have failed. As a result, 3 conrods have snapped and made 2 holes in the engine block. Basically, the engine is scrap. I decided to get a replacement engine - a 2012 one with low mileage. My question is: should I change the main & conrod bearings (king brand) before mounting the engine as a precaution? What about the oil pump?

Thank you

Alex S.

Do you know the cause? Low on oil? Oil pump fail?.....

Hello!

The cause is definetely oil starvation (look at pic #1 - the color of the crankshaft); I think the main bearing rotation has caused oil starvation to the con rod bearings causing them to overlap destroying the engine.

Buying the replacement engine is definetly a risk that's why I was thinking about changing all the bearings & oil pump in advance.

Thank you for the book provided, it will be of great help!

Hi!

That's exactly what I thought... There is no guarantee that the problem won't reappear but at least it won't appear soon cause of worn main bearings or failed oil pump...

Any other suggestions? Glueing the Censored main bearings to stay in place?

Alex

i suggest you dont replace the bearings, but do replace the oil pump. the post 2012 motors supposedly have bearings with tabs so in theory no more turned bearings

Hello!

Can someone confirm this? The car is 03/2012, that means that the destroyed engine is probably 2011. The bought engine is from 2012. Maybe disassemble and look before installation?

Thanx

Can't you drop the sump and check them before your fit the engine?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Sure, I'll do that... Do all the bearings have tabs (main/conrod)?

Having a Disco4 3.0l MY2011 and got a MY2015 engine for replacement.
Is it a straight swop or should some of the parts from the MY2011 be put on the later engine. Like injectors, turbo or more?
Any other issues to be anle to make the swop?
