Upgraded to 6hp26 metal sump

Swapped out the gearbox oil today and replaced with the separate filter and metal sump, ran through two oil changes so fluid should be of reasonable quality.

Got the filter and sump for £60 thanks to a £15 off ebay voucher and 10l of ag55 for £50 delivered.

Oil was black on 1st change and still dark on 2nd Change. Will proberbly do another change in 6 months.

Drained transfer case oil to while underneath. Just under 1.5l until the oil started dribbling out of the full hole, all in all a decent days work.

Gearchange was fine before, but you hardly notice the change now, other than the revs 😀

I am pretty sure that the transfer box does not have a fill level orifice just a drain hole and a fill hole you measure 1.5 Ltrs and pour it in, it’s the same with the diffs and manual gearbox only the auto box has a fill level hole and then you have to have the fluid temp to above 30 deg first.

The transfer box certainly does have a fill orafice, as do the diffs.

Noticed this morning the gearbox isn’t holding onto the revs as it has been the last few weeks.

I also reset the gearbox adaption after the change, apparently so the gearbox adapts to the fluid change quicker.

I think what mrsput means is yes there is a fill hole as per cars of old, but what is different is you fill through this hole a specific quantity of oil and not the old fill to spill method.
I did the fill to spill on my tfer box but went with the quantity method on the diffs.

I did notice it took a fair few miles for my gbox to be 100 percent happy after oil and adaptations reset.

I found with the transfer box fill hole, I couldn't get the full 1.5 litres in, without it p Censored g out. In fact I tilted the car a bit to get it all in. Fancy designing a fill hole at a level lower than needed ? Pathetic. A right royal PITA. Rolling Eyes

Oh yes just re read, but I haven’t done the diffs only the transfer box and gearbox, so I still believe I have used the correct methods.

Will change diff oil in about 6 months when I do another autobox oil change.

Will have to check what oil and levels for the diffs, I know my rear diff is just standard and not active.

how did you get on with sump, when i did my 2.7 it came out ok with tube cut but on the 3.0 there seemed to be literally Censored all room, it was even hard to get the new steel sump in i had to take slack up on engine with a jack to get room to fit it under cross member and even then i had to weave it in tactically

literally found it 10 time harder than on 2.7!

also was there any swarfe on the magnets in the old sump, mine had some on and i cant rember any on them from sump when i did my old 2.7, pic wuld be good if you have one i will ge pic of mine and stick it in here.

Hi,

It was very tricky to get the sump on, had to jack gearbox to give enough room under the cross member like you said, nothing at all on the magnets other than a very fine silver paste, didn't take any photos of that sorry.

But in saying that, I'd say it would be even more difficult to put a replacement LR pan and filter on Sad

Was very hard compared to the 6hp19a box on the audi, that was easy in comparison.

heres pics, it now looks MUCH worse as all the oil has had two weeks to drain off, so basically there was a paste but it was just oil coloured before not drained off completely to look so metallic.

The 3.0 sump is an utter Censored

The 2.7 is tight. The 3.0 is only just possible!

ha ha could not agree more mikey,

ah well if your was same maybe its not all bad, did some heavy towing today and it performed really well.

I've been planning on attempting the gearbox sump conversion to a metal pan on a 4.4 v8, is there any space issues or like the 2.7 is there just about enough and is it a feasible job for home spannering?
