EPB - bedding in procedure really needed?

Replaced the discs & pads all round with V8 with kits from AF - all good except one of the handbrake shoe linings fell off when I brushed some dust out!
Quick order & wife collected a set of shoes. Fitted then - all went ok.

Should say followed Bodsy's bible for all of it. Went to carry out the bedding in procedure & didn't get past 6 stops & loud squealing started. Attempted 7th same thing & display days EPB fault. Cycled ign & released EPB & fortunately brakes free so drove home.

Following day removed the rear discs again to find the lining on one of the shoes 2/3 in bits around the inside & on the other side one badly groved.

I chose to sit for a minute between each stop but that should have been ok?

Replaced the shoes with a further set & set them up as per the bible again. So being of a nervous disposition I started the bedding in procedure again but only did one stop - it pulled up really well & straight, so cycled the ign & canx the process.

So question is - is it really necessary to carry out the procedure if the EPB is working well? I am nervous of doing it again & the shoes failing again!

Anyone else had this happen?

I didnt do mine after new shoes, but did recheck the adjustment a few weeks later and they were good, again 12 months later checked and adjustment had not changed at all.

I followed the process last weekend after replacing the rear discs and pads but not the EPB shoes. On the first cycle it barely stopped the vehicle. On the tenth, it was locking both rear wheels. All the the same speed (around 22 mph). So I was glad I did it. But if the braking effect was sufficient on the first few cycles I wouldn't have carried on (as per OP's point)

Yes I was surprised how well it did stop so thought there was no need to carry on

Like you if it hadn't stopped well I would have gingerly kept going but would have driven it to cool them down rather than sitting there Smile

Always thought this process was a bit hard on the handbrake. Last time I replaced the rear disks (I've never needed to replace the shoes, still like new after 100k!) I did a few rolling stops as per procedure then spent a week or so applying the handbrake every now and again in rolling traffic at very slow speeds.

As you say if its holding the car fine (in both directions) then what more is there to do?

I could be wrong here, but doestt applying the handbrake when moving also apply the service brakes?

It does switch on the brake lights but I am not sure it applies the brakes

Applies service brakes if used normally but not if in bedding in procedure . I was involved at LR when the brakes were in design stage and the park brake is a duo servo, ie acts the same forwards and backwards. The bedding in is required to make sure there is even lining contact with the drum, to hold the 3 tonne plus vehicle in all conditions and meet the legal requirements
