Transmission and parking brake error plus E in gear display |
|
Hi All,
my money pit of a Disco appears to be striking again, 2005 manual, with 116K miles on the clock.
Failed MOT in April for broken front spring (paasenger side), which I changed for the re-test. I just got round to changing the driver side a couple of weeks ago. Ever since then, I'm getting the error where the transmission and parking brake warning lights come on, and there is an E where the gear should be showing on the display.
Sometimes the errors light up as soon as I start it up, other times I go about 10 miles before it comes on. Comes on when travelling at the steady speed, or even when parked. Sometimes when the errors are present, the engine hunts about when idling, not every time though.
I searched the forums and tried the process of going through all the gears etc in low range to reset the sensor, but it never changed from E when I went in reverse for bloomin ages.
Another check of the forum and I noticed a post where Mikey suggested that if the E is showing, it's likely electrical. I thought that since it started after I replaced the spring, maybe I'd broken a wire or something in the drivers side wheel arch. I've just taken it all apart but it looks OK. Nothing obvious anyway.
I plugged in an iCarsoft diag unit and have the following errors:
P174C: Gearshift lever Y position sensor - circuit low
B1b02: low frequency coil
B1b70: Local interconnection network bus circuit 2
B1C57: Passive start ignition relay coil circuit
B1D14: Interior lamps 2 circuit
B1A59: Drivers seat rear control relay failure
B1A62: Right mirror lamp failure
B1b74: Front foot - defrost mode stepper actuator
B1b75: Front foot - face mode stepper actuator
B1b77: Front right air blend stepper actuator
All appear to be electrical related?Could it all be part of the same problem?
Any tips or pointers on how to proceed\what to check, would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

So,
I put it into a local Indy specialist for a look, of course the error didn't show when they had it on a run, but there was an error logged. They suggested the XY sensor, drop the gearbox, new clutch, £1500 + VAT.
Before going down that road, I thought I'd try an easy job and just change the gearbox oil.
After the oil change, the error still appeared, but it felt like it was less often. Also, it would sometimes show the parking brake warning but no transmission warning, and the gear selector indicator would still work, but delayed.
I was encouraged.
Last week I got the error on the way to work, but not going home. It didn't appear when they wife did a 30 mile round trip at the weekend, or on Monday going to and from work.
Previously, I could never get to my work and back without the error appearing, approx 30 miles round trip.
I was encouraged further.
Monday night I changed the gearbox oil again, and this time I put in a magnetic sump plug. The oil that came out was pretty clean, had only been in for 1,000 miles\1 month.
As of now, Weds night, the error hasn't appeared since Friday morning, some 250 odd miles ago.
Fingers crossed some new oil has done the trick!

These sould like the problem ones:
P174C: Gearshift lever Y position sensor - circuit low
B1b70: Local interconnection network bus circuit 2
These are common and you can ignore
B1b02: low frequency coil
B1C57: Passive start ignition relay coil circuit
B1D14: Interior lamps 2 circuit (MAYBE CUS YOU DON'T HAVE DOOR LIGHTS/FOOTWELL LIGHTS?)
B1A62: Right mirror lamp failure
LOW BATTERY can CAUSE THESE:
B1b74: Front foot - defrost mode stepper actuator
B1b75: Front foot - face mode stepper actuator
B1b77: Front right air blend stepper actuator

IMHO just coincidence. We‘ll See.
I had similar symptoms, it was the clogged fuel Filter. Achim

It had a service a few weeks ago too, fuel filter changed.
When I drained the gearbox oil the first time, only 700ml came out, which wasn't good.
I'm just hoping that bloody warning light stays off!

I had the same errors. Parking brake warning light and transmission fault with an E where the gear indicator is. I also tried the reset procedure for the XY sensor but the faults kept returning. My local landrover specialist replaced the XY sensor and cleaned the magnetic pickup in the gearbox and replaced the clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder and so far the error has not returned. He said that when he removed the gear box there was lots of play in the flywheel. All in was £1200 including vat.
Hopefully replacing the oil in yours has solved the issue for you

Currently have this issue!!
Had front struts done and then a day later new battery
Was getting transmission fault and then epb 30 seconds later with E on the gear screen
Restart the car and starts fine.
Took a while to figure out it was happening when I went in to 6th gear. Realised when I was recalibrating the xy sensor. Which wouldn’t fix the problem as 6th gear triggered the bing bong
Went my mechanic who checked all the gears (manual) while the car was turned off and stationary.
Going to call next Tuesday and see if there’s any availability. If I don’t figure it out myself by then. Disco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

Cmb2020 did you ever get to the bottom of this issue by yourself or garage? Mine has just started playing up with E in the display, which alot of people don't have when I read the past comments..I tried briefly the recalibration procedure but not sure I did it correctly as the video I watched recommended doing reverse last not first...I've got a much more detailed procedure off here which I will try.
I will probably have to face facts that it will be a clutch issue as the bite point is very high and have always had it in the back of my mind

Hi the fault on Mike is the xy sensor
It only happens in 6th gear if I slam the manual gear stick hard. If I’m gentle it’s ok. It says E but then after I turn the car off and on it’s ok until the next time I go in 6th
I did gear oil flush and made a long spray tube and blasted the sensor internally through the gear filler flush
I’m due tomorrow to put an endoscope in the filler hole and see if I can see the xy sensor
Otherwise it will be going to mechanic after exhausting my own capabilities Disco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7
