Mongolia Overland
Morning all
I'm hoping you can all help scratch an itch I've had for some time
When I was 25 I was shortlisted for the 2009 G4 event in Mongolia - I was a lot fitter then than I am now!
Now at 34 with the family and charity built I'm taking the decision to see it through and start planning the trip to Mongolia
I've owned
Disco 2 - with defender transfer box
1989 turbo 90
300 tdi 90
V8 90
Td5 90 - was stolen and is the one I fantasise over!!
My plan is to buy a disco 3, I figured I'd make sure I was comfy for the trip, and prep it in time whilst getting reaqquainted with Greenlaning and skills required
Currently there is me going, but it's open to others if your interested, I'm assuming it'll take about three years to be ready - based on time to get out driving and time I'll need to prep and fabricate the parts needed - though outside of guards, jack, tent etc I can't see it needing much fabrication of parts.
Feel free to offer advice, tips, routes etc.
All the best
Elliott

Sounds like an amazing adventure.
Good luck, and you have to put up a post on here with loads of pictures of the prep and journey. Just to make us all jealous.
Take a look at this link to the Discovery book about driving to Beijing. On the first post is a link to view the book online. I bought the book and no I'm not selling it.

Now then
Thanks for the reply.
It's going to be a novice's journey to get there, and i'm one of those that like to make the drive, sometime, trickier than it needs to be.
I have this romanticism of driving trails and tracks to tarmac for the journey, but deep down know i'll probably manage a day in that terrain!
As i sort the car and start to get it muddy i'll keep all informed
Hope alls wel

Why 3 years to get ready, what's wrong with 2018?
And say hi to these chaps of you see them. Now that's a Road Trip.

Photographed in North Cape last month, though interestingly they did seem to skip Mongolia.

No real reason
Probably just giving myself time to get back out on UK runs, prep the car - also find the car - and hopefully find a few interested parties to go with!
I have this burning desire to get lost, so the prep will be tied in with climbing holidays and long weekends driving trails
All the best

Speaking with my brother last night he threw a spanner in the works.
He suggested going in a 101 forward control, which has me REALLY tempted....
Think this will be our first guess of the route, worked out we'd need to average 350miles a day.
I would have thought it easily achievable especially with the limited traffic!
just not 100% sure an FC would not break me bum after 12000 miles!

12000 miles in a 101? You'll be deaf and crippled but it will be an adventure to remember!Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Seriously, never been in a FC but 60 miles in my mate's deafener and my spine was shouting at me so 12000 in a FC would be heroic.
Suggest let your brother follow you !!!.
