For the last two days I have heard a scraping noise like a stone in a caliper which increases with speed. It's quite pronounced when going slowly but didn't change when applying the brakes.
Today it suddenly got worse, much worse! and the car appeared to be slowing and vibrating, this was confirmed by putting into neutral. The noise did not disappear and the car slowed much faster than it should.
I jacked the car up and tried to rotate the right front wheel, which is where the noise appeared to be coming from. It took great effort to turn and would only go 1/4 turn accompanied by a grind and clunk.
I removed the wheel and have inspected the brake but can't find anything obvious. When turning the brake disc by hand (hard) there seems to be noise from nearer the differential.
Does it sound like the diff? Would this not mean the noise would go in neutral?

Thanks Mikey - straight to the (expensive) point!
Here's a little video which may help confirm this - and I presume it should not be driven?
Cheers

I'd expect the pinion bearing to have collapsed. Take the gearbox undertray off, and give the propshaft a wiggle up and down. Should be fairly conclusive... My D3 Build Thread

An update on this.
It wasn't obvious if the noise was wheel side or diff side so I started with the easiest and discovered that the wheel bearing (right hand) had completely collapsed and seized (could be turned with driving force but not by hand). The old unit rattles and deposits metal shavings on the floor!
So one shiny new hub assembly and I did the discs and pads whilst in there and she is as good as new.
Interestingly I had none of the usual wheel bearing symptoms before it went.
Thanks for the input too Mikey. 2012 Discovery 4 HSE Sumatra Black

I just read this and was going to post that it sounded like my wheel bearing.
Mine was also so bad I couldn't turn the wheel by hand lol.
Good result!

Yes good result but I've never heard/seen a wheel bearing go so bad so quickly - but perhaps the car is so well sound proofed I just missed it.
