I'm starting the notice a slightly odd steering thing.
When turning slight right or left I notice a slight 'tick' noise. It feels fairly light, more like the steering column rather than the track rods.
Also, the power steering occasionally feels heavier. It's quite subtle but definitely there.
Power steering fluid level is fine. No leaks or suspension noises detected.
Do you think this could be the lower UJ in the steering column?

Could be, they can go notchy and some owners do report a light click.
My own gave the feeling of driving over cobbles at low speed. Mods:

Any way of testing it? Should I just take it out and inspect it?

There's little point. When they are knackered, visually, they look exactly like a brand new one and once you've removed it, you may as well replace it.
If your car is up around 100,000miles, it's probably time anyway. Mods:

I'm on 150k.
I found old posts which list the price as about £65 but they all seem to be over £170 now.
Thanks for your help.

Try spraying with wd40 and see if there is any difference, only problem with lubrication it washes the dirt out that is taking up the wear and creats play, at 150k miles it is more than ready for replacement, the average is nearer <100k. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Sounds exactly like the steering column issue I had on mine.
I tried spraying with lubricant but it didn't work so had it replaced.

Thanks for the advice.
I'll give it a spray of lube first and see how it is. I'm prepared to replace it though!

Just Tom conclude this issue, I eventually replaced the lower steering shaft as oiling it made no difference.
All is good now. The UJ on the old shaft had seized in one pivot. Part was about £190 so not cheap but had to be done.
Incidentally, my steering wheel is now very slightly off centre with the new shaft. There's no adjustment in the shaft so I'll have to get the track rod ends adjusted next time I'm at the tyre place.
