From memory i put the grease either side of both 'O' rings, it tends to keep everything together during assy' too.

thank you, i did it at last! fitted it in, and got rid of the tape thats been holding it together since months!, i didnt remove the entire front console, please see pictures, i also put some wire between the clip so it doesnt drop and i had it in the 1st gear when i done it, sitting in the passenger side. and also had an apple charging holding the rubber out of the way. dont mind my battered leather gaitor material. anyone know how easy that is to change? its very very bad!
let me know if anyone needs any help with this, took a good 30 mins with around 20-25 tries, you just have to push the clip onto the rod, takes a good amount of force.
thanks everyone for all the help from the very start!
huge thanks to hugeviking, ThamesD3 and Narpy.

Well done, at last
You did well to work in such a confined space
It was that big metal part surrounding the gear stick that i had to remove, but it did mean i could get reasonable access to fit the clip, remember it was the clip nearer the front of the vehicle that i had to replace.

thanks!
thats crazy, i couldnt have done that, anything more than that and i would have given up, ive got like 2-3 cuts on my hand because of the plastic, it was a struggle but got there. i didnt fancy random gear box cut offs in the motorway or down the road, one time it was on a hill with cars behind me, i went to change to 3rd and the tape i had on broke! luckily had enough speed to get over the hill and down and also take a left into a small road and fix it again before i drove, but glad to have it permanently fixed. 1 of the many problems ive got out the way.
thanks again for your help, wouldn't have done it without your guidance!
