Always when the local motor factor has closed.

Got friends over from France for a few days so suggested we all bundle in to the Disco and nip into town for some lunch. Only the car had other ideas.

Got out of the driveway when there was a lurch from the gearbox and every light on the dash came on, along with the car dumping itself on to its bump-stops.

Reversed back towards driveway and got out to open the gate, only for the car to die. Proper dead. Everything off, rear doors locked, stuck in park, nada, zip, zilch. Yay Laughing

Gave it a few minutes to sulk and tried again while Mrs Dosh was rummaging in the Freelander for the jump leads and my FCR. Somehow it came to life, although with the usual christmas tree of faults.

Now this isn't my first rodeo, so while running off all the fault codes I also stuck a multimeter on the battery. 12.1v - and this is a Yuasa Silver fitted only 9 months ago. Started the car up again and voltage reluctantly climbed to 13.8v. I then stuck on the heated seats, screens, fans and lights and off it went back down to 12.3v

So new alternator time. Not bad after 9 years and 155,000 miles. But why does it have to happen when the local motor factor has closed for the weekend? Big Cry

Yup, already ordered from Advanced. If it had happened this morning I would have grabbed one from my local factor, but as they shut at lunchtime it's gone on my all-too-regular order with Steve and Ian Rolling Eyes

Ah but Paul, which would I replace? And with what?

D3 - mostly smells of dogs - 6,500 miles in the last 12 months
Freelander - mostly covered in mud and scratches - 4,000 in the last 12 months
R53 - mostly smells of passenger terror - 2,500 in the last 12 months.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the economics and overall case for replacing any of the above with something newer is poor.

Let me put it another way:

Replace D3 with D4. Cry when it ends up smelling of dogs and going unwashed and unloved by Mrs Do$h, who likes cars but has an allergy to caring for them

Replace Freelander with.... Who am I kidding? It's too much fun as it is. Having bought it as a non-runner and built it up into something really quite unique I've no plans to move it on.

Replace R53 with... Actually I'm quite taken by the Alfa Giulia. Some insane discounts available and it's a really nice car. But based on recent years any car I have that fits in the fast and fun category ends up doing less than 3,000 miles a year, so no, not replacing it at this point.

I'm clearly not keeping up with the NoDo$h garage - I thought there was a S/C Jaaaaaag in the Clampitt ranch.

The Jaaaaaaag went about 18 months ago. I want driving it enough to warrant having such a machine in the driveway. Bought the R53 Cooper S for supercharged giggles for a lot less money!

Talk about kicking a bloke when he's down.

Indeed it will. Had a neighbour in Usk that was a farmer. His daughter got on a horse & promptly fell off. He said it was one of the best things that every happened as she didn't want to go near horses ever again. Whistle Thumbs Up
