Car only starts with clutch pedal down? More issues?

Hi everyone, I got my clutch changed last week, which has issues already but that's a different story, but now the car only seems to turn on with the clutch down, otherwise you can just hear that clicking noise, but nothing. This didn't happen before?

Please help

Thanks all. Sad

I always start mine with the clutch down so don't even know if that's normal. I don't think it is so I'll be interested to read what has caused this.

Some cars force you to have to press the clutch to start ... Sat there for several minutes looking like a right lemon in a courtesy VX Corsa once. Steering wheel completely hid the warning "press clutch to start" flashing up on dashboard

Yeah I've had a couple of cars that require the clutch to be pressed. I don't think the D3 does though Confused

Take it back as it needs to be sorted. The clutch has a sensor that can be used as a start inhibit in some markets and the shift system has an XY sensor so that the gear and neutral can be determined. If the vehicle thinks it may be in gear it will not start without the clutch.

Whilst starting with the pedal down is common in some markets and models it is not good for the thrust bearing.

If it's a manual check that the XY switch is operating i.e. That the gear position is showing on the instrument display. If not then the car will not start as the system doesn't know if the car is in gear or not. Depressing the clutch remedies this and the car will start. The switch if faulty can be changed with the gearbox in situ just be careful not to detach the breather hose on top of the gearbox! The

er ... technically speaking (and I thought you'd have said this Mikey !!) all Discos have a clutch, but only some of them need someone to manually operate it by use of that 3rd pedal thingy !! Laughing

Mock not the afflicted lest ye best likewise afflicted. What else is your left foot to be used for when driving? Try jump starting an automatic.

it sounds like what your saying is right. theyve messed up with the replacement as it doesnt show what gear its in at all, so it must be because of this, im gonna take it back next week and tell them to sort it out, i will let them know in advance that I've checked with my expert land rover online friends 8) and they have suggested that youve probably jammed/not connected a cable somewhere in the gearbox that leads to some sensors. so they atleast know what the hell, theyre looking for. thanks everyone for the help. this is a great forum to be a part of.

will let you all know how it goes.

You should always be able to start a manual 4x4 in gear with the clutch out, this is to allow you to safely ascend or descend an extreme slope under control if the engine stops. My D2 and D3 can do this.

The Jeep I owned (for a very short time) would only start with the clutch down, main reason I sold it.
