Oil Change - Is This Normal - Feedback Appreciated

Hi All,

So today, I collected my 2007 Disco 3 TDV6 from its service with a reputable LR specialist. One of the items undertaken was an engine oil and filter change.

Having driven (only) 5 miles at no more than 40mph, I pulled into services for a fuel.
Whilst there I thought I'd pop the bonnet and have a quick scan under the lid. On more than one ocassion over the years I've received a vehicle back with parts not refitted properly (engine covers, under trays, etc), so it was just a cursory glance as a double-check.
Whilst under there, I thought i'd inspect the dip-stick (expecting nice clean golden oil), and what I found was black oil, and on doing the old finger and thumb rub test, it didn't seem particularly fresh.

Am I right to be suspicious that perhaps the oil didn't get properly changed?

My oil change experience during the last 15yrs has been with petrol vehicles, and you could always see the new oil once changed. Surely diesels are no different?

Anyone here with experience of regular oil changes on their diesel Disco who could comment/advise, would be appreciated.

Cheers
Jay

P.S. Is it easy to view the oil filter from under the car? This may indicate whether the task was undertaken or not.

Hmm, ok, lesson learned...

I've just searched/read this thread:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic74883.h...+black+oil

Looks as though this is normal - which is great because I can continue to visit this specialist with confidence, because they certainly seem like a good outfit and have also previously done some good (mods) work for me Smile

Cheers

No not RCV.

..and seeing as this was seemingly my error and nothing untoward, its best that I don't name names, because I've only had a positive experience with these guys thus far.

Cheers

If engine oil isn't black it is not doing its job, even after a few minutes running Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Surely this was a wind-up?!?!?!
This guy must have been baiting the other members of that forum.

Not even a muppet would do that.

Oil changed?

I had the same thing after a service, oil as black as coal. So I went back to the service manager at Strastones (Top man)
He came out and had a look and said that he would change it again and asked if I wanted to watch.
So I did..
Can't moan at that. Whistle

the soot from the combustion process gets into the oil (via the piston rings or cylinder sides) and makes the oil black

All my diesel cars as black as can be after its run for a few minutes, at work on the trucks on the other hand they oil can stay cleanish for a few miles and even then you can still see its recent.

My Td5 defender runs clean for a while after an oil service.
I wonder if the second rotor filter makes a difference.

Every other service...

My Disco gets two oil swaps one for thier "barrrel oil" with Wynns oil change additive, run for an hour.
Then drain out, new filter, the good stuff oil.

The very next service (late this month) new sump pan.

Will it make a difference ? I think so as it preserves my slice of the dream.
