How long on average should the park brake shoes last?
I am planning on replacing my rear discs and pads, so should I do the park brake shoes as well?
My 05 car has 54k on the clock
Thanks

I would particularly if they are original. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

If the park brake is used correctly (manually no auto release) in theory they should last forever as they would not get worn - they only lock the brake disk.
Incorrectly adjusted brakes causing drag on the drum, using auto release, and dirt in the drum could mean they wear - so inspection and replace if needed - of course you could just replace if expense is not an issue.

Auto release keeps the mechanism operational - the amount of wear has to be microscopic.
Obviously they they are checked when you renew discs (every other year)
I always leave things they'll last way beyond the next service. If in doubt change. BREXIT - done properly.

VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Manually releasing the EPB also keeps the mechanism operational and doesn't wear the brake shoes.

My Discos yearly MOT test (like your OZ WOF) came around & I always seemed to have some work to do to the handbrake.
Back then I used the brake when I remembered to do it.
Even if not set for auto on it releases Auto anyway.
Cars fail MOT easily if the hand brake not right.
I asked what others did & was told that "ignition off" "handbrake auto apply" was one way.
Programmed in & a whole bunch of miles / years later - no issues. At 120k mikes second set of shoes.
I didn't realise that just using & depending on "P" is holding 2.7tonnes on a gearbox pawl.
I live in a very hilly part of the UK. So it's piece of mind too to have it brakes when parked.
The FL2 I have (old style manual handle) I always seem to forget.. especially releasing.
3 of the 4 cars we have & use have electronic handbrake - they all seem to have moved this way.
Standard auto on - on my Jag XK - no issues
Standard auto on - on my work provided VW golf - no issues
Now programmed auto on - on the Disco no issues now
Old fashioned handbrake lever on FL2 - things have moved on. BREXIT - done properly.

Can you programme 'auto ' epb on when ignition off in the car menu or does it have to be done in the ECU ?
Will have shoes checked, as no point in replacing if only minor wear

Has to be done with a "tool" not on D3 menu.
Mine done at "indie" service.
Shoes checked on annual thorough service.
On second set at 120k miles.
I did upgrade to V8 brakes some time back.....separate matter. Worth doing. BREXIT - done properly.
