Are all parking sensors the same and is it true BMW fit?

Been having probs with my parking sensors for some time and have finally had enough!

I didn't fancy taking off the rear bumper as all the screws are rusted tight.

I get a continuous tone with no error message and its intermittent, occasionally they will work fine but then stop shortly after, majority of the time its the continuous tone as soon as reverse is selected.

I did the ear-to-sensor thing and thought it was one of the rears so replaced it with the bumper still on believe it or not. It was one of the inner sensors which you can just about get to from underneath with a bit of persuasion.

Didnt work, so i gave up.

Then my car went in for a bit of work at an independent and they very kindly gave me the print out of all fault codes one of which was B1B40-01 FRONT LEFT OUTER SENSOR - General electrical failure.

I've been able to get to it and remove it through the fog light hole, looks ok and cable looked fine so i'm going to try a new one.

I've been told that BMW sensors are the same and sure enough the sensor i replaced on the rear was a BMW part, but are all the sensors the same on the D3? All the front ones are bent at 90 degrees and im assuming all the rear ones are straight.

Can i just replace the front left outer with a matching BMW version (which are cheaper) are they specific depending on position in the bumper?

All the same on the D3.

I fitted a £7 one off ebay and it worked.

Thanks, I thought so

I've checked the sensor that the car claimed to be faulty and it happily clicks away like all the others. No corrosion on the connector and the wires to it seem all fine.

Could it still be faulty even when it's clicking?

Will the rear also stop working if one of the front sensors fail or are front and rear independent?

I walked around the car with the boot open so I could hear any change in the sound but nothing - just the continuous tone.

Had the same problem with a rear inner sensor. When it was cold and damp continuous tone, when dry and warm (above 8 cent) worked fine. Sensor changed and everything OK

could be a fault with the signal wire (R/G/Y/B) and still click i guess.

But at £10 or less for a new sensor, you really need to have a spare to swap about.
Otherwise it's just bumper off/on and little progress.

Yes front can stop the rears.

Are there any specific points on the loom where I should look first? Bumper needs to come off anyway coz I can't swap the 2 inner sensors without the bumper off. Had the headlight out to check the connector block and that looks good.

I have noticed that if I put it in reverse and move off quickly when something is in range of the front like a wall, it seems to work fine for about 2 seconds then I get the continuous tone.

I had an issue with the parking sensors on my D3. Just a random fault that was hard to replicate. It was eventually traced to a tiny nick in the loom, caused I suspect by a flint on Salisbury Plain. This occasionally allowed a very small amount of water ingress when the roads where very wet or it had been driven through a ford etc.

Similar to your issue, when it played up it would work okay for a second or two. So it might not be the actual sensors.

Where it crosses the metal bumper cross member is a good place to look

I to am starting to get some strange reactions to the rear parking sensors but no error messages stored, the occasional long tone when nothing in range. All sensors click, water does seem to bring on the issue, but after the long hot spell we have had it started again, so not sure it is water ingress.

What is the BMW part number, do they have the same range as the LR ones, I have read on here that the auction site ones have a far shorter range of detection.

So how can definitively test all aspects?

Looks like a front bumper off job then to have a good look at the loom.

Can't comment on the range of the BMW versions sorry but I do know they are exactly the same physically. I don't have the BMW part number, just searched for BMW parking sensor on auction site and found one that said both BMW and Land Rover fit.

All the front sensors are the same and have the 90 degree bend on the connector, I think the 2 rear inner sensors are the straight type, not sure about the outer but someone on here should be able to clarify.

I do hope it's a problem on the front and not the rear, last time I attempted to get the back bumper off I failed at screw number 1, rusted solid and the ones in the arches looked even worse.

Any tips on freeing rusted screws other than the obvious WD40?

for rear arch screw removal, it's usually a case of wheel off, and then grind the screw off.
