Got a puncture yesterday... |
|
So, still a newbie to off-roading, went for a cruise yesterday. Basically, ground a bit rocky, and a water crossing that could have had anything going on!!
Went and got a slowish puncture in the sidewall didn't I.
Question - I had the tyres at 36 psi. Did I increase my risk of puncture with the tyres inflated at road use pressure (always drive at 36 psi - whatever car I drive) or not? If one is less likely to get punctures at less pressure, [logic kinda suggests this to be the case] then what is a good pressure for offroad - gravel, dirt, rocky and a touch of mud. [Currently just using the 18" wrangler all weather that came with the vehicle]
Did a landrover day, and they said nothing about tyre pressures. I hope those of you with more 4x4 experience may shed some light on this one for me.

Generally lower pressures off road and on gravel will improve traction and reduce the likelyhood of puctures. The tyre moulds to the surface better at slow speeds.
However I dont think it would have made much difference to sidewall damage.
I cut my OEM Wrangler on the gutter, sliced it open like a knife.
They have very thin sidewalls and are more prone to puctures. I used to get puctures all the time out Oberon way on gravel roads, caused by small sharp rocks in the sipes wrking their way into the tyre (I had high pressures as well as I didn't let them down until I actually went off-road).
Later in the life of the tyres had star puctures and wrote off a couple of them.
I have had one puncture with the Coopers HTs ( caused by a nail in the side of the tread) none on gravel. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
