D3 6-speed auto gearbox oil and filter change |
|
I'm going to help a friend carryout a gearbox oil and filter change on his D3 later this week. I know it's not an easy job so I'm doing a bit of research first to try and prevent getting in the do-do with it.
I've seen the various threads on here and elsewhere regarding the filter change and I'm a bit confused over the sump removal/refitting. We're going to use the OE type plastic sump with the integrated filter (don't want to risk getting leaks with the aftermarket metal replacements). My question is will it come off and the new one go back on by undoing just the transfer case and offside engine mounts and lifting the engine/transmission up as far as needed? Is it absolutely necessary to remove the exhaust and crossmember(s) like some seem to suggest? I do hope not...
Thanks in advance.

Exhaust and crossmember stay in place
RH engine mount and transfer case mount off
Lower end of steering column off the rack
Lift the engine up as far as it will go, and the sump fits *just* My D3 Build Thread

Thank you very much for the prompt reply. It's what I wanted to hear. So much BS and confusion seems to surround these vehicles (elsewhere of course, not DISCO3.CO.UK!). Get this one out of the way then it's on to parking brake shoes, rear discs and pads on my D4...

There is no more chance in getting oil leaks if you change over to the metal pan and filter - plus it can be done without having to move cross members and other things on the D3 TDV6 to get the pan in.
Dont make it harder than it needs top be.

i have changed mine to metal about a year and a half and there is no oil leak. having done both changes (plastic and metal) i can easily say that the metal one is a walk in the park considering the amount of work for the plastic one.

Another vote here for moving to the metal one, been on there three years with no leaks and no problems.

I have only ever seen one dry metal sump, mine, but then I don't crawl about under other people's to look at them!
I can't take credit for the fitting, Newbury 4x4 changed it, I had no idea that leaking sumps was a "thing" until this post and I don't know what they did that made it seal where others don't unless I have just been lucky. They said that was the way they preferred to do the gearbox oil and filter change so I went with it.

That said, I've never fitted one, I've always fitted the plastic
This is why we decided to stick with the OE composite/plastic pan. Plus my friend is a farmer and the plastic one is cheaper than the metal which makes him happy. Farmers are not easily parted with their money

having to change into plastic without the use of a two post lift (which i don't have) ohhhhhhhhh. even if the price difference of the sumps is 3 times i will still go for the metal one.

I didn't know about the common oil leak issues when I fitted mine a few years ago either but it's been dry as a bone, in my case ignorance was bliss as if I had known about it I probably wouldn't have fitted the metal one.
I'm sure there was a tightening sequence like tightening a cylinder head, whether that was the trick to prevent leaks or maybe I was just lucky. Stu

Is the ZF one to fit the ZF6HP26 - I know nothing about BMW - there are lots of different makers that use the gearbox.
