So I was working on the tailgate that had failed to open due to a broken cable. So after repairing that I noticed a patch of rust on the lower tailgate about 1.5 inch across. It's just a small area of blistering. My question to the knowledgeable forum is - what's the best way to fix it?
I know it's got to go to a bodyshop for spraying as I have other bits that need to be done - two doors on the passenger side which some generous individual has keyed from front to back. Would you use jenolite on it after maybe griding it back? New to modding my disco 3

I thought it was made from aluminium? I know it can still corrode, but I don't think Jenolite would be a good idea. Aluminium corrosion is tricky to get rid of. It keeps coming back. My Defender is testament to that!

It'll only keep coming back if you don't correctly reinstate the protective treatments.
Aluminium alloy will try very hard to turn itself to powder so to prevent this it is usually coated with a chromated coating and then painted with an etch primer. Once compromised, damp gets in and the rot starts below this coating then its the devils own work to stop it.
On aircraft we use a surface coat usually compromised of Alocrome 1200 or Alodine, then etch primer, then top coat but have no idea what is commercially available to replace Alocrome or Alodine.
If your tailgate is bad, it'll want digging out back to bare metal, then protecting followed by painting. Mods:

If you can get to it from the inside a splodge of grease is great for stopping rot in its tracks the grease sweats and keeps on sweating protecting whats there, used this trick on the notorious mercedes wheel arches, 2 odd years later the rot was no worse which is quite good going on mercs of that age!

Whatever you have lying around, if you are happy to grease a bolt/pin/bush with it then it will do the job fine.
If you notice anything thats greased on machinery has sweat marks around it and doesnt rust, thats what you are after.

Lynall are you on the mercedes forums too? I've got two 90s C class mercs, one with periodic rusty wheel arches, so you spread the grease over the lip on the inside of the wheelarch? New to modding my disco 3

Used to be on the merc forums, but havent owned one for a few years now, I used to get a latex glove on and a good dob of grease push it up into the wheel arch and pull your hand back whilst keeping upward pressure on to force the grease into the lip.
So what you are after is a good amount of grease on the inside of the arch not visible from the outside, doenst effect washing the car etc.
Wife had several mercs all 3.2 petrols straight and v6 models, I only had the one myself before going back to the land rovers, the one I had was a W210 never seen a car rust away like that before!
