How far have you driven without the key in the car?

For the first time this morning, having dropped the kids at School, I nipped back home to collect a dry cleaning receipt and then jumped back in the car, pressed the start button and set off to the dry cleaners. Difference was that when I'd come back into the house I'd ditched my car keys in the place we always keep them and rushed back out once I had the receipt.

The car on the drive is what, 10+(ish) metres away from the house and I keep my keys (or rather I did..) close to the window overlooking the drive.

The car started and about a minute or two later I arrived at the dry cleaners maybe 1/3, 1/2 mile away. I stopped (parked) the car and as I went to get out I realised I didn't have my keys with me. I checked again and then tried to start it but yes, it wouldn't confirming I had indeed forgotten them.

After a walk home and back all was back on track.

Although I had the radio on I didn't hear any warning the key wasn't with me/the car but I believe there is one? I am also wondering what would have happened had the 'Eco' function cut the engine at the traffic lights I pass through? I assume it would have stayed stopped.

Lots of issues for me there and although I keep the car in the (alarmed) garage at nights I am testing how far keyless start works today. This little episode happened when I'd left the car unlocked on the drive. I am pretty confident (as I've experienced it) that when the car is locked the key needs to be very close in order for the car to unlock but not so keyless start which has surprised me.

Given I have a clutch of teenagers some who drive and some who don't but would if they could I may need to watch out for this issue a little more.

I suppose this is an FYI really... (and a Shocked doh admission...)

Wow 10meters, slightly worrying. What year is it?

My 64 plate, key has to be within half a meter of the steering column. Definitely cant start it standing up outside the car with the key in my pocket pressing the pedal and button.

Don't know about the start/stop bit - mines never worked Very Happy

Yep, my 10 plate is the same. I can't even lean into the car to try and start it. If I get out of the car, straight away, the warning pops up.

I've driven my 66 plate over 100 m, realised I'd left the key at home, driven back & retrieved the key.
Never turned it off, though.

ISTR it should only start with the keys within 1 meter or anywhere inside the motor ....but if you got out after starting and then when back to the house and accidentally put your keys down then the motor will still run for as far as you want to drive ..only issue would be once you stopped. Are you sure you didn't leave it running when you dumped the keys?

Think you're right, DG, having started the car, dumped key in the house & drove off. Victor Meldrew

Has it got keyless entry as someone could be lining you up for the theft of your car as the put boxes in the trees to read the rolling codes your fob and car use by providing a bridge! Of course it may not be this but one to be aware of as its spiked recently on keyless entry cars Thumbs Up

Read it on here Mercedes are disabling keyless entry for free... Think LR should be doing the same.

Guessing For, BMW, etc. will have same issue

Hmmmm, tried to replicate several times and couldn't. I think that I must have left it running IMHO... Can't get it to start unless the key is very close to the column.

Enjoyed the exchange but my mistake.

Am still wondering whether Eco stop start would have caused me to 'stall' on the road at the lights. Lucky I never really got to find that out....

Thanks all.
