So camera has to be disconnected to allow cover to be removed.
Correct - there is a short lead about 12inches from the camera with an RCA connector - so I will just unplug when I remove the cover.

I've just fitted the camera which replaces a numberplate light on ours, i think its a neat factory look solution.

I had one on mine as well as my tow cover with a switch to go between the 2 as I found the number plate one a bit offset to hitch the van up with Discovery 3 se gone

You'd be wise to check if you're happy with the number plate illumination at night with the lamp replacement camera.
The light window is so small on those things it looks like the bulb has blown.
I changed mine for a stand alone handle type and put the original light back in.

Mine has passed three MOT's with a number plate replacement camera, also ISTR number plate lights are not a legal requirement on reflective number plates, anyway you could always get your torch out if you can't see it It can when others can't,
