Battery light help please - Alternator or ..?

I’ve just joined but have been reading sections of the site for over a year.
I have several questions regarding my voltage readings. I’m hoping for some expert
guidance.

Battery light on after a 2 week stay at local garage - (bearing, drop link, abs ring followed
by oil ring & pressure sensor. The main car so took the hit as I needed it back quickly...did not appreciate the wait.)
Having payed out for many hours labour I took family on a 100 mile round trip – on return battery light comes on.
Drove back with forehead on steering wheel Wink

I’ve checked battery and its holding 12.38V when off.
On cranking drops to over 10V.

Spike of 13/14ish Volts on cranking then settling to 13.49V.

I then added a load of Air con/stereo/lights and got a steady 13.53V

I realise the following Voltages may be from different locations within the engine but this is what I got:

satnav/diagnostic screen:
11.0V – 10.5V (cranking) – 12.5V idle

ODBII ECU
11.98V – 13.56V idle

Made a 20 mile trip first thing yesterday & it sat at 13.5V – no light on... then it came back.
I realise from many posts here that the alternator is the likely cause. But before I get one off ebay and set about trying to change it
myself I thought I’d see what you all thought?

Any help gratefully received.

Check the earthing cables too, I've heard it said that an extra earth cable helps in some instances

Also try charging the battery overnight if its not been used for over a fortnight it may need a boost to bring it back to full charge Thumbs Up

The light tells you you have a charging system problem - either the sense system (but not in this case as your alternator has not degraded into dumb mode) or the alternator (yep, this is the fault you have).

Disconnect the battery and give it a charge whilst you order a genuine alternator.

You may have done this but check the battery cable connections are tight. I was having weird readings, went to check voltage at battery and the earth terminal was loose. ( Been at local independent a month before), tightened it up and is now OK.
