Just noticed that I have no brake lights apart from the high level one, could it just be the bulbs gone
. Had no warning lamps come on?
They are standard lamps.

Probably just the bulbs blown, pretty common to see on D3s.
There's no bulb monitoring on a D3. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Yeah check the bulbs.
You can even swap the top and bottom bulbs on a D3 if you don't have any spares to hand

Are the brake lights just the top 2? Or all 4?

Why would a bulb failure cause a CAN bus (vehicle system communication network error)?
/pedant mode off
As I said above the bulbs are not monitored by the body controller for failure, which is what I think you mean, given the incorrect proliferation of the term "CAN bus" to explain any sort of automotive electronic magic 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Depends on the failure mode, if they short or arc as they fail it will show up as an error. Just going open circuit will not show.

The lower bulbs are tail lights that just happen to have an unused stop element.
You can wire this up and complete the double stop light mod. Details are in my signature, which is a link to the How-To. Mods:

Yes the misfortune that alot of the LEDs forsale on ebay are sold as CAN BUS error free.
Annoying the LR does know the headlights have failed and stores error codes, just doesn't bother to tell the driver. Probably because the driver would then expect the tail lights to have bulb failure monitoring! I'm still amazed they don't have this on the primary lights!

Well worth keeping spare bulbs in the car as mine seem to blow quite often.
