near miss

or should that be deer miss - 3am deepest france doing 70 down empty straight road - idiot deer (2 of them) run straight across road. Swerved to avoid to such an extent that scrubbed the rubber on the nearside tyre on the wheelarch, but was very impressed with how the car stabilised and felt in control throughout. For such a big lump. Glad the road was dry though not sure how the AT3s would have handled that... Shocked

Animals running out of the hedge is one of my big fears about driving in rural areas. We get a lot of Pheasants here in Norfolk and occasionally Muntjac Deer, and Fallow deer. You have to teach yourself not to swerve as the first reaction, too much risk of hitting another car if you swerve. (not suggesting you were swerving without thought) Thumbs Up

I had a Fallow Deer run in front of my Range Rover Classic about 20 years ago. Wrote off the front of the car!

Pheasants

I almost read "Peasants" in Norfolk.
I've had a couple of close ones on the north Yorks moors with above said birds "rising" off the road as you approach & be at windscreen level.
There enough mass to take your screen out.
When I see them I always slow down.

Hitting deer & cattle has caused deaths with the animal coming right through into the passenger cabin.
You are very lucky.
 BREXIT - done properly.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK

FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Deer are a bit of a common day/night hazard up here I'm afraid.

Some 30 yrs ago I had the pleasure of a red deer jumping onto the (vinyl) roof of my 2CV - two of the legs came through and were thrashing around for what seemed like an age at the time before it managed to free itself Shocked

Worked with a guy several years back who lost an eye when he ploughed into a deer running across in front of him. Deer came up over the bonnet and through the windscreen.

Nasty.

Many years ago I hit a rather large deer in one of my Mini's (an original Mini not a lardy arsed one Wink ) and it totally destroyed the car, luckily I only had a few cuts and bruises Confused

This was last year coming along the C200 at Kielder. (ETA Bloody hell I've just looked at the date on the video it was 2015, didn't think it was that long ago Embarassed )

 Cheers Ian

Hit a Muntjack with a Renault Master about four years ago, 45mph, met a car coming the other way, it crossed out behind the oncoming car just as we met, took out the bumper, radiator, air con condensor, intercooler and all the mountings, parts alone were a tad over £1800, that was without the bumper as we managed to salvage/repair it.

Mate hit a fallow in his V8 Rangey - didn't even see it.

Boom - cabin filled with smoke and auto brakes cranking him to an abrupt stop!

Did £8k worth of damage...

First animal-in-road encounter I had was a rabbit ... car full of mates, acting daft I drove straight at it but always intending to swerve. which I did ... just as it hopped that way too. fur-lined wheel arch as a result.

Couple of years later I was seeing how fast I could get my Dolly Sprint to go on country lanes ... doing ton plus through The New Forest, just saw something out of corner of my eye and slammed on the brakes. Not 30 foot in front of me, a large deer strode into middle of road and glared at me whilst the whole herd crossed the road ... pretty sure i'd have come off worst if that had gone same way as the rabbit version !

A few months after that had a similar experience crossing Salisbury Plain ... doing well over a 100 (hey, I was young then ! ) and something in a field moved way ahead, but was mainly hidden by the hedges. Mindful of the deer incident, scrubbed most of the speed and watched one of those rare beauties of the English countryside amble across the road in front of me ... Chieftain Tank Neutral

These days I drive more sensibly. Honest.
