Are 3 ton axle stands enough?

Are 3 ton axle stands enough for me to put the whole weight of the front of my D4 on (1 each side?)

Or should I buy 6 ton ones?

And finally, how exact;y do I get the front of the car on 2 axle stands?
Is it Ok to jack one side, lower onto a stand and then do the other side?

Thanks

3tonne is fine.

At worst you will have about 2tonne on one of them, and that assumes you have only one other point on the ground!

The 3tonne is max weight, not the tested weight. Thumbs Up

Your whole vehicle doesn't weigh three tons, in theory one three ton stand should support the total vehicle if you could balance it on one. So there should be no issues with just the front on two three ton stands.

You can lift the front by placing the jack in the middle using the undertray as the jacking point. At least I'm sure that's where Disco Mikey lifts mine from. Confused
At the rear you can place the jack under the rear diff.

Also, Bodsy's Brake Bible has some great info on lifting points and jacking.

The only reason we tend to use larger ones (around 6T) is to get the height rather than the weight.

you jack on one of the front suspension mounting points (not suspension arm).

make sure the parkbrake is on.

Once you get one side up, you need to be very careful when jacking the other side, that you don't pull it off the axel stand (or destabilize it)

One way to do this is putting the axel stand points up in stages.

or push in on the jack wheels (with foot) when jacking, to try and prevent the jack pulling the car towards you.

or jacking the other side up at the end a bit, just to ensure the axel stand it's under lateral load.

or all 3.

When jacking on the passenger side be careful not to damage the tank or compressor. (shouldn't be a problem for you in this case)
