Which Roof Tent, Cheap, Mid or expensive

So a friend of mine Whistle ( Rolling with laughter )

Is looking at camping options, one of which is to keep the current trailer and move back (Yet again Shocked ) to Roof Tents. Currently has Oztent which will be sold to help pay for RT

He's also possibly looking at getting a new trailer, but that's another story completely Rolling with laughter but may not be able to afford this now (Perhaps next year)

Looking for a 1.8m one and after much research, they fall into 3 categories for this size and with downstairs room
1) Cheap Chinese type at £1000ish on eBay
2) Mid brand, so TuffTrek etc at around £1500-£1700
3) Top end, such as Howling Moon at around £2000+ for the same
4) 2nd hand option, so perhaps Howling Moon at £1000 ish for a 10 year old one

Planning this time not to Censored about with swapping again ( Rolling Eyes ) and as such keeping for very many years - 5+ trips a year minimum

What would you go for, pay the best money now (thanks to Credit card Whistle ) or go for cheap option?

Cheers
Iggy on behalf of his friend Whistle

I still believe in the old adage "but cheap, buy twice". It does depend on how much you'll use it though. As an example, I bought a Halfords branded roof box (mid range quality IMO) 11 years ago. I've used it on about 9 holidays in total and it's been brilliant. Had I been expecting to use it more frequently, I'd have gone for a better quality one. So in your case, I'd go for Tuff Trek etc. or Howling Moon etc. new or used depends on your budget and the condition of the tent.

I've seen some of the Tuff Trek gear and it appeared to be very robust. Thumbs Up

I've never really understood this whole "roof tent" ethos, I can't seem to understand why when there's a perfectly reasonable floor you guys climb onto your roof. Shocked

I'd understand it if we had deadly biting nasties like in Australia, where getting off the floor was essential, but Buxton.............in January, nah. Laughing

I'm very happy with my Tuff-Trek. Used 4/5 times a year and was secondhand when I bought it off steve73 on here.

It stays on the trailer pretty much year-round now and hasn't been winter stored since I owned it. Never a problem though. Every Spring I take the cover off, open the tent and it's still all dry, damp-free and fresh.

That said, I have a garage now, so this coming Winter I may well take it down and store it.

Thumbs Up

If I had put my RT up on the Thursday night at mud fest Ian I would still be blowing over the moors somewhere, by god it was windy.

Well Barbara and I have been busy looking and closely examining various roof tents and have just got back from a factory visit to Germany where we saw the roof tents being made.

4x4 Overlander will be bringing in the Roof Lodge range of German made roof tents and also their range of awnings which vary in size from 1.4m up to 3m.

The Roof Lodge roof tents will be slightly more expensive then the cheap Chinese version or the mid price ones. However they have certain features as standard which the other makes do not have.

We will be exhibiting the tents and awnings at the Stoneleigh Great British Land Rover show so come and have a good inspection.

We will also have the Cargo Bear quick release system for roof tents on show as well.
