Judders - transfer case??

Hi all.

I've got the judders on my 2005 LR3 Auto. I've had it for a while.
Had the gearbox flushed, no improvement. Replaced the Torque Converter with a new one from a Bristol Transmissions. This seemed to improve it but it's still there.

Seems to get a little better when it's warm - driven for a while.

I also have a rhythmical scuffing sound which corresponds to the judder. That doesn't change with the engine revs or gear engaged but does with speed.

Gears change absolutely fine.

Seems to be at its worst in the sweet spot between accelerating and decelerating when on a straight road. You can feel it at low revs pulling away at junction esp on a hill start.

I'm thinking transfer case. Would a faulty transfer case ECU cause this?

Hopefully get around to changing the T case oil this week to see if that improvs it.

Any tips advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Fuzz.

Are you sure it's not a sticking brake caliper or EPB rubbing?- check for a hot disk/drum. Bristol Transmissions have a very good reputation.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks guys

I'll check the rear brakes, CV and prop shafts.

Bristol Transmissions only supplied the TC and oil and yes I know their reputation is excellent that's why I used them - their service and help were impressive!!

Thanks for the advice guys 😀

No not yet MikeyB - they didn't fit it - local garage did. I couldn't get the time off to go to Bristol otherwise they would have done the job too - reasonable price from them to supply and fit. They supplied the correct oil too - Ravenol. - just over 7 litres.

I may give them a ring next week.

Hi - Thanks T/C. - Transfer Case or Torque Converter?

It's got a new Torque Converter. New not recon which has supposedly been manufactured by ZF and has been manufactured to reduce shudder.

Diagnostics through up lots of transfer case codes. - I've recalibrated but not improved it. Now code free.

Sorry Fuzz I feel its the torque convertor Embarassed mine seemed to play up on very light throttle loads the tell tale for ours was a slight flutter on the rev counter IIRC this is caused by the lock up clutch slipping ,I did use command shift as recommended on this forum when it first started that helped for a while I got a local man Steve Norman top outfit !!! to fit a brand new ZF TC which was the same price as a recon one hope this helps Thumbs Up

Ok mate thanks - mines a new ZF TC £575 from Bristol Transmissions.

No rev fluctuations - scuffing sound before and after new TC.

If it is the TC they've sold me a duff one!

Hi Fuzz I spoke to Bristol and it was a toss up between them and Steve Norman ,Steve did suggest that some TC replacers only did the TC itself and not the lock up clutch ! but I am sure Bristol would do the whole unit . I think that if the revs are steady and the sound has never changed the transfer case does sound an avenue to investigate sorry that I can't throw anything at it
good luck
