LR approved used car - new purchase

Hi everyone, firstly welcome to everyone as its my first post on the forum although I've been browsing it for last couple of months already - I'm looking to buy an approved used LR but I'm not sure I'm being told correct things by the dealer (I'm naturally suspicious of car dealers as have dealt with couple of cowboys in the past already).

So according to LR website approved used cars have to be less than 5 years and 100k miles at the point of purchase.
Car I'm looking at is slightly over that - registered 30 october 2011 so 5.5 years old but its sold by franchise dealer and is advertised as approved used with standard 2 year warranty and 2 year eu/uk breakdown cover.
Sales guy is absolutely positive (and confirmed it with his colleagues as well) that its correct and its approved used warranty from Land Rover UK and not dealer specific.
It is however not advertised at all on the LR UK website but only on dealers own website with information that its approved used and it comes with such warranty. Its also advertised as approved used on Autotrader.

I spoke with my local LR in Edinburgh (said car is from another dealer about 5hrs away) as I thought maybe something else was available locally (which there isn't) and mentioned to them other deal I'm negotiating and they were surprised about warranty claim and stated they don't believe what other dealer tells me is correct.

So not really sure what to do - I suppose when I go over to pick up the car in a weeks time I would know for sure but if what I am told is not correct I'd rather save 10 hrs round trip.

any thoughts from anyone if this is possible at all? I think I've seen another car like this on Autotrader (over 5 years old but apparently approved used) so maybe its possible but I am suspicious.

I've just looked through the Approved Used manual that came with my used 2016MY D4 and it also confirms that it's "designed specifically for Land Rovers less than five years old and with less than 100,000 miles at time of purchase".

I would be nervous at this stage. There are plenty of D4's to choose from; if in doubt, I'd keep looking Thumbs Up

Thats why I am nervous and asking the question but its main land rover dealer (LR Belfast) and I've been offered good trade in price on my car and Discovery is priced well as well.

How could they get something as fundamental as this wrong if they are wrong.

If the car went through the workshop pre Oct 2016 (under 5 years old) and was inspected and passed under the LR used car scheme then all is ok, it just means that they have had it in stock since Oct last year which often happens at the end of the year.

It might have been passed under the used scheme then, but the warranty policy would still be starting on a car over 5 years and 100,000 miles old. Without the written confirmation that this is done with the knowledge of (and is acceptable to) the party that are underwriting this cover, I wouldn't be happy.

But, it's up to you...

Landrover do not say that the car MUST be under 5 years old when sold with the warranty, they state that the warranty is designed for cars under 5 years old............big difference

Warranty aside, do not for one minute think that buying a LR approved vehicle means you are getting a quality car. Rolling Eyes

I would get them to email you the invoice confirming the car will be under the LR approved warranty scheme from your handover date.

Sorted

So all in all its possible that dealer is not making it up but I should have this in writing before commiting to buy. WRT to buying quality car, I realise that its no guarantee but I maybe foolishly hope that with Approved warranty for 2 years if things go wrong Land Rover will have to fix them. I had approved warranties before from AUDI and Merc and they were pretty good.
BTW I am so looking forward to it already.

My first D3 was sold as an approved used LR and had a 12 month 'genuine' LR warranty even though it was nearly 10 years old with some 85k miles on it.

I'm with Tanglewood. Don't assume an approved used LR is a great car. I've seen dealer cars that based on appearance alone I'd not touch. That said, there is more chance of getting a positive result from a main dealer if it all goes horribly wrong than from many non franchise garages.

Hi and welcome

just another reminder that the Approved warranty is a Car Care plan and NOT landrover Shocked

so when you say if anything goes wrong LR will fix it Evil or Very Mad wear and tear is not covered so the Panhard rod inner ball joint noted Amber that was raised at the last service was Not covered by the approved warranty Evil or Very Mad

Don't get me wrong I would still buy from main dealers but check the car like you would any other, I raised faults that they missed when I bought ours and it still had to go back within the week

Thumbs Up

Just to add my tuppence worth, I purchased a 2010 plate from Parks of Ayr in April last year. It has a 2 year warranty on it and I have the paperwork to prove it. It was advertised as LR approved but the salesman said it shouldn't have been, but was no problem to do the deal with it with all approved features.
I guess it depends on how much they want to sell the car...........
