I've only seen 3 rotary selector failures but the similarities between them were obvious. Symptoms included a noisy extend and retract, notchy selections and occasional binding.
The dealer suggested response has been to replace the module, which is eye-wateringly expensive. In all cases I removed the module, inverted it and blew it with compressed air which has resolved the issue.
The common link is the state that some of you get your D4 interiors into and this crud migrates down the gap between the selector and housing. Really, I see some shocking interiors and yes I am judging you. The mud, crud and grime should be on the floor mats and on the outside of the vehicle - not the bit for humans.
The final factor on the one I saw this week was the owner burning leaves & paper and breathing in the smoke whilst inside the vehicle. The resulting fine layer of ash and moisture had set solid in the selector and the stink when I blew it all out was rancid.
Hoovering the area around the rotary selector should be regarded as essential maintenance.

They just make the best of everything they have.

I think that's why he bought Detol.
Didn't you grow some interesting varieties of mould in your D3 Del?
No mould was made in the interior of the D3. Daft thing is the interior of my D4 is clean as a clean thing. For now!

Starting to see the lock solenoid pack up causing it not to come out of park, or only being able to select reverse. Lovely and clean in those ones, but they were FFRR's

I know what you are saying about smoking. I used to work on a truck years ago and the driver was a park drive smoker. The switches on the dash were push buttons (leyland road train) and they were so gummed up with nicotine that every year for the test we had to remove the switches and soak them in a tub of thinners for 24 hours to get them working again
The whole inside of the cab was coated in a thick sticky tar and it gets everywhere!!. Needless to say the driver died at 45 from lung cancer

Robbie, have you ever disassembled the selector module? Is it possible/doable?Now with: Tow bar & storage, Xenon's, Remote Timed Climate, Mood Lighting, Cubby Fridge, DRL's & Mud Flaps
Accessories: Rubber Mats, Spare Wheel Cover, LR Tyre Pressure Gauge, Warning Triangle, LED's throughout & Leather Gear Selector Top
Further Planned retrofits: 13 pin Tow Electrics & Heated Steering Wheel
I posted on mine becoming notchy five months ago in November, I refute the claim of the crud getting in, mine had less than 7k on the clock. Ironically it has behaved itself since I posted, tend to think in my case with it becoming notchy it is software or start up related, when it does it, turn everything off, lock it up and walk away, next time you start up it works as it should.
