D3 front diff side extension seal |
|
Whilst messing around underneath the car changing the front prop, I spotted a moderate oil leak from the extension tube seal where the o/s front driveshaft mates up.
Not turned up anything specific on a forum search - can anyone tell me if the oil seal can be changed leaving the tube in situ?
Thanks Mikeyb Not such a Disco Newbie now!

There was a good post where a forum member rebuilt his front diff with new bearings etc but I cant find it!
Iirc the bearings in the diff are the same as defender wheel bearings?

Thanks, I have have no plans (or hopefully need) to rebuild the diff, it's just the extension tube on the drivers side that is leaking. I'm hoping not to have to take it off, but knowing for sure one way or the other will determine when I find the time to do it. Not such a Disco Newbie now!

Sorry I realised that its just the post I mentioned really went into detail and Im sure would have shown pics of the support tube etc, I think he was from abroad and did a really good job, well worth the effort to search and try and find it.
I did find another one that mentioned 5 different sized bearings and 3 seals needed for a rebuild.

Not had time to fit anything yet, but I bought the parts from AF a while back.
Couldn't find the seal listed on their website but talking to them revealed that it is the same as one of the other diff seals - the nose seal if I remember correctly?
In any case, the part number of the seal they sent me is TZB500050 Not such a Disco Newbie now!

You might want to read the post below first before pulling the diff. Apparently the diff breather fails and pressure builds up and forces oil out of the seals. If you cut the breather you will hear a whoosh of air ... that means the breather is clogged - the part is cheap and just replaced mine (preventative).
Take my opinion with a grain of salt (I am no diff expert) but it might be worth snipping the breather and if you hear a whoosh - then just replace the breather and see how it goes.

A good call on the breather, there was a big rush of air out of mine when I pushed a screwdriver through it. I'd only done 10 miles today as well so it must have built up over quite a while...👍🏻 2011 D4 SDV6 HSE
