Just a word of warning applies to clocks and compasses.
A few years ago a work college brought an old WW2 compass into work to strip down and clean in his tea breaks. He was going to remove the old paint and re-paint where required.
This happened and was going well, only problem was he was a health physics monitor at a nuclear power station and when he went to get out on the radiological controlled area the monitoring equipment went into alarm.
After initial checks they could not find the cause so more detailed checks were carried out where it was identified that the isotope was not one from the power station but from WW2. At this point the light bulb came on and they realized what had happened. Checks were made and there was contamination found on the desk where he had been working and various other areas, because this was above the relevant levels and rules they then went to his home, where he had been working on it before he came into work and yes you guessed it there was serious contamination in his home, on his clothes and even in his car.
This resulted in clothes being removed, bags being removed and even wooden kitchen worktops being removed.
The paint was all the glow in the dark paint which in those days used radioactive material to make it glow. It is ok all the time it is fixed and undamaged on the clocks or compass but once it starts to flake and come of it becomes a serious risk to health

To continue with your post, most Air Cadet squadrons had a collection of clocks and dials from various scrap aircraft, most were made up into cockpit simulators or used for instructional purposes. Needless to say they were collected by the parenting station for disposal for the very reasons you mention. Sad because some were true works of art but necessary for H&S reasons
