Starter Motor

My disco has been making awful screetching noises about 50% of the time on start up. I have previously posted on this and got great advice.

It went back to Guildford under warranty and they replaced the starter motor despite me telling them what the advice on here was

All was OK for a week and then started happening again,

Took it to Southampton as much closer, They had it in for a day about a month ago and said it was still the starter motor so re booked it in as they didn't have one in stock.

It went in today for 2 days,

Just had a call from the service dept saying that they have replaced the starter motor but that isn't it.

Its something behind it that has teeth ( I am not technical) and some had been broken off, they need it for a week to repair, all warranty so no cost,

Should I be worried about another underlying problem?

I has been doing it 50% of the time on start up and occasionally on Stop/Start at lights etc and then I have to switch it off/on to get it to go - which is damn annoying

If it's missing teeth on the ring gear on the drive plate, that is quite concerning on such a new car....Stop /start doesn't help, but nevertheless, associated components should be beefed up to cope with that Rolling Eyes ....Maybe not the starter motor, but the ring gear should last the life of the vehicle IMHO. Shocked
The first thing I do with any vehicle with Stop/ Start in my household, is to switch it OFF. Laughing But I should add, there is only one, my Son's BMW f21, which is just out of warranty. Thumbs Up

Switching it off while its under warranty is a big mistake, use it as often as possible while under warranty to make any weak components fail and switch it off when warranty has expired Thumbs Up

I wouldn't Big Cry just yet, get it sorted with a new ring gear and starter, and see how it is over the next year or so. Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up unusual for a starter ring to fail, obviously a manufacturing fault, they aren't particularly expensive, but labour charges are to fit one.
