Temperature Guage stuck at bottom. Red Light on??

Hi All,

The temperature gauge on the dash is showing needle at the bottom with red warning light above. When driven it never moves.

I have unplugged the coolant sensor and turned the engine on, the needle now goes immediately to the top and the red light stays on.

Does this indicate a broken sensor before i commit to purchasing one?

Secondly if this is the case does anyone have any for sale? (right angle varient)

Thanks

Tom

Does sound like it.

It's probably just a thermistor so if you measure its resistance you might find its short circuit. I doubt it's open circuit as it goes full hot.

Oil temp also drives the gauge. And aren't they unreliable

Don't think you can say they are unreliable. My D3 had one changed in 234000miles - and that was when the engine was changed at 121k - and it wasn't faulty then!

Yes the oil sensor can fail, but not exactly in the same league as brake light switches or oil pumps!

Different circuits but they draw upon the same 5v source at the PCM one can pull down the other with certain faults. You know when you have an oil temp issue as the revs at idle go nuts.

This particular fault does look like a vanilla ECT issue, so a cheap fix.

New sensor fitted the other day with no joy. Big Cry

Can anyone explain to be how to diagnose the cause of this fault?

Anglefire can you please explain what you mean by this:

Essentially remove the plug from the sensor and use a DVM on resistance and measure its resistance across the two pins of the plug. As it's a new sensor, it should be fine.

If it has a value, then either go back to the socket on the car and see if you have voltage at the plug. I would expect 5v on the one terminal relative to the other - if you get nothing try each pin in turn to ground. If you then get a voltage, you have an earth fault, if still nothing, the you have an issue with the feed from the Engine control module ecu. The wire number is C0634-68 according to the diagram I have. But where that actually is on the unit, I can't help. Logic tells me it's terminal 68 - but it is a Land Rover !

Back from garage with no look. List of work carried out:

Got the car back from the garage today and still have the same issue. Provided them with the notes above and still no look. Thankfully they given a PDF document listing thier fault finding.

Looking at the notes below does anyone else have any suggestions what my next move with this fault should be?

CHECKED COOLANT TEMP GAUGE SENSOR OK - 37000 RESISTANCE
CHECKED WIRING VOLTAGE FROM ECU - 5 VOLTS - OK
CHECKED SIGNAL WIRE AC2 IGNITION ON 3.1 VOLTS AT 20 oC
CHECKED EARTH WIRE

PLUGGED IN COMPUTER AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING FAULT CODES -
C1A20 - PRESSURE INCREASE TOO SLOW (SUSPENSION)
P1401 + P0405 - EGR FAULTS
P02A2 + P121A - CYLINDER BALANCE
P0579 - SPEED CONTROLP0118 - ENGINE COOLANT TEMP CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT.

DELETED ALL FAULT CODES FROM SYSTEM BUT HAVE RETURNED

CHECKED ALTERNATOR - CHARGING RATE 14.4 VOLTS - OK
REMOVED EARTH LEAD AND CARRIED OUT BATTERY RESET - FAULT
STILL PRESENT.

WOULD ADVISE NEXT STEP TO TAKE TO LANDROVER FOR A POSSIBLE
SOFTWARE UPDATE.

All advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.
