I am planning to replace the scissor jack with a D1/2 bottle jack. The reason being that I have an RRS (don't shoot me!!) so the space for storage isn't there as per the D3. I have searched the forum and this seems to be the way forward for me.
The question I have is, has anyone on here actually used one with a flat tyre? I have seen images of people using one with a fully inflated tyre, but the clearance seems quite tight.
I am running 19" rims so whilst the inflated rolling circumference may be similar, the deflated circumference will be less than that of larger diameter rim/tyre combos.
TIA

I have had one since my D1 and used on D1 and D2. No problems. Never had to use it on any of my D3/4s. If it is the red one check the seals and the date. They tend to leak especially if stored on the side. You can use the caravanners' trick of a slope of wood to drive flat tyre on and get more clearance.
Aldi sometimes get bottle jacks in. Fit under the rear seat a treat. Flat tyre and jacking on the Sport is not an issue, 20 inch rims and 40 profile tyres so the car does not drop that much,

I've currently got one in bits as it wasn't extending enough
But I have big wheels, so not doing to be able to provide you with much help.
Not sure where I'm going to put it in an RRS.
Maybe behind the right side trim? and break it out in an emergency, assuming I remember its there.

When I bought my Disco 3 I noted that the jack and brace were still in a new condition
and after reading up on the subject which describes new jacks collapsing on first usage,
I decided to replace with a bottle jack.
I plumped for the tried and tested Discovery II bottle Jack as I was impressed with it
during my ownership of the TD5 and they are readily available 2nd hand.
This would be used for roadside repairs, punctures and the like.
Problem of storage then arises, however in their wisdom the designers of the Disco 3
have built in a spare battery storage compartment in the engine bay and as I had no plans
to utilise the spilt charge system decided on using this space.

I ruled out both of the spaces in the boot area, one where the scissor jack and other where the detachable towbar lives, due to a lack of means of securing the bottle jack in place.
I constructed a wooden frame just bigger than the space available in the compartment and
lined it with thick plastic, sprayed fire rated expanding foam available from Screwfix/Toolstation etc into the frame. This stage is trial and error to the correct amount, when I felt I had enough foam in the box, I added
another layer of plastic and put the jack on top of this to use as a mould.
Left overnight to dry, the jack is easily removed.
The foam that had expanded can easily be trimmed flat and the plastic peeled away.

Purely for aesthetics I gave the foam a coat of paint. Jack now fits snugly in the engine bay.
I also bought an expanding wheel brace and along with the jack handle both fit in the space in the boot
under the 6th & 7th seat.
I have the trolley jack for any jobs whilst at the house, you can see from the picture that the
original scissor jack has a locating spigot that fits into the chassis, to compensate for this,
I also purchased an aluminium billet that fits into the cup of the trolley jack and the spigot locates
in the jacking point of the chassis.

What price safety, Well in this case less than £50 all in.
The scissor jack was taken to the local Recycling centre, I see there are a few on the well known Auction site for sale but my conscience wouldn't allow me to sell it on due to the reasons listed above.

Thank you for the replies so far guys.
I've had a 300TDI commercial and currently run a D2 for my work, so I am familiar with the D1/2 bottle jacks.
Due to lack of appropriate space in the RRS boot I cannot store the jack there, or fit a Sprinter jack in there. So my plan is to utilise, as Sea Raider has done, the space under the bonnet for the second battery.
The block of wood idea under the wheel sounds workable.
