Rear Panhard rod how do you check them?
Hi,
two questions please
How do you check for play in the Rear Panhard rods / track / tie rods
at the recent service the N/S/R inner track rod end (panhard rod) was noted as Amber for play
I have been underneath this afternoon to have a look what is required and spray a bit of penetrating fluid on the threads, but with a bar under the panhard and onto the lower arm I could flex the rod but could see no movement anywhere, would you expect to feel/see movement in the joint or do I just need a much bigger bar?
Secondly is there any adjustment to be made where the bar comes through the inner mounting bracket that has the slotted nut on? it seems to be an oval hole, do you adjust it here, I thought the arm just adjusted for length like a track rod.
Who has replaced their own rear panhard/track rods
did you just tighten the slotted nut up at the ball joint end or does it go into a oval hole and some adjustment is required there
If I change it myself just need to know if I need to mark the position in the hole or not ?
(will match the length of new rod to old and 4 wheel alignment to follow)
Never done them, but reading the manual, you have to have them positioned correctly in the slot - just a measurement from a fixed point. Mark.

The inner rear is slotted. It has to be 10mm between the lower part of the inner boot and the metal of the chassis directly below it.
Obviously the rear tracking has to be reset. (4 wheel alignment is best).

Hi,
thanks for the replies
and offer of help Rob
Hopefully I will sort it myself but as I could feel no movement in the joint while its on the car,
I had thought about removing the rod and see what it feels like with no load on it,
will then decide to replace it or not as the MOT is due end of next month and don't want an advisory or fail
but did not want to upset the alignment if the rod is serviceable so best to check first

will get a measuring stick out and have another look

That measurement is when you renew the rod, to et the new one up.
To check for movement, jack the car up wheel free, with axle stand. Then hold the rear wheel at the three o clock and nine o'clock position and gently pull and push, you can feel the movement at the wheel. The inner end of the rod will be moving if worn.

Thanks for that Steve
jacked the car up today to check and Yes can feel the knocking so will have to order a new one
But
measured the gap to find it's no where near 10mm but 19mm
checked the O/S one to compare as that one does look fairly new (poss 2 years ago when we bought the car from L/R ) and that one is 11mm
should there be any difference N/S and O/S ?Transit! 2019
