The modified one does nothing to stop the tea leafs, they just have to work up a bit of a sweat. Uncle Ray plate still needed.

Search the forum, loads of owners have stripped them down and got them working perfectly again.
I think you have to drill out a few rivets and then unwind the mechanism but they are repairable.

Mine got snagged inside and the only way to sort was to unwind with someone pulling on it causing some tension. This allowed it to be unwound without trying to double up on itself.
Then clean the cable, grease or oil and do the same in reverse.
The problems arise when it's not under tension such as when the spare wheel hits the floor and you keep unwinding. The cable somehow manages to fold back on itelf and you're stuck.

cheers guys
read that ref unwinding them
don't know how long it has been wound up , mine didn't come with a spare wheel
however for love or money it just keeps getting stuck
it looks as though the wire has been kinked
was thinking for the sake of £50 it may be worth just getting a new one , don't fancy messing around on the side of the motorway, pouring down with rain and finding the thing sticks
also thks ref the protector plate
will get one of those as well
been looking for the plastic trim that is bolted to the chassis , think the wheel sits against it, think that's a case the breakers
nice one guys and will be another little job out of the way
am slowly getting there

Hey are you looking for a RLD spare wheel protector? I have one of those as well, as I fitted a rear wheel carrier so don't need it any more. It's just lying in the garage. £40, and I can drop it off with the roof rails.

Not sure if it will fit. I assume your spare is off the car? If so I will bring it along, and if it fits inside your wheel then you're good. We can do cash when I get there.
Could we do morning, as I'm visiting friends later that day?
