Then clean the cable, grease or oil and do the same in reverse.
The problems arise when it's not under tension such as when the spare wheel hits the floor and you keep unwinding. The cable somehow manages to fold back on itelf and you're stuck.
Another thing that f them is the tyre places using an air gun or similar on them. The cable gets wound up inside. I had it happen to me and ended up having to replace it.
