Off to Scotland - Elgin area - things to do?

Hi All,

I'm off up to Scotland for a week in a couple of weeks, staying on the coast between Lossiemouth and Fraserburgh.

I've looked through the standard lists of things to do, but wondered if anyone had anything they would recommenced?

I am not a huge Whisky fan but would definitely like to visit at least one of the distilleries - any recommendations there as well?

Thanks! Thumbs Up

Plenty of beaches to visit and golf courses.

A visit to Bow Fiddle Rock would be (is) on my to-do list.

Also a visit to Pennan (Local Hero film location).

Lots of forests to explore on foot or bike.
Unfortunately no 'green lanes' or off-road driving without the landowners permission.

Thumbs Up

Exactly. Plus toast is out of view and a cuppa. We now swap the tomato for something more savoury. Whistle

It sounds like youd be at Banff. That's a good 50 miles from Elgin. Another 15 miles on to Brodie. Another 35 to Fort George.

Not a lot to do this time of year. Elgin had changed over the years. There a big Asda going out the Rothes road and a Gordon and MacPhail shop just off the centre. They sell a good selection of Whiskey.

All that area has good distilleries, most won't be open until Easter.

Pray for good weather, it will make a difference between wanting to come back and never coming back.

I think glenfiddich at Dufftown is open all year round. This might help you http://www.glenfiddich.com/uk/distillery/

If you like golf maverston golf course near Elgin is one of the best around. The prison at Peterhead is meant to be very good aswell the have opened up the old one as a visitor centre.

If you like shortbread, Deans of Huntly have a cafe/shop next to the factory, even the air around there smells of shortbread

If you like beer, BrewDog's original brewery is in Ellon, and they do tours and tastings.

If you like soup, Baxters are based near Fochabers, although they don't do factory tours anymore, the history might interest a foodie.

And if you fancy being chased by a grumpy old git, I'll give you my parent's postcode and you can drive down their private lane and turn around outside their house - bonus feature of "see if you can get away faster than he can unlock the gun cabinet" Laughing

Great ideas if it were Summer, which I suspect is when people last visited, but I know the Dolphin place is shut until Easter, Macduff Marine is only open limited hours and days.

Anyway, the bottom line is check them yourself before travelling specifically to a venue. Thumbs Up
