Loose spare wheel

Chap followed me into a car park and told me that my spare was dangling ...

I've wound it back up again - question is, has someone tried to nick it (I thought they'd just cut the cable?) or do they wind themselves down over time?

It's an MY16 with ad blue and a full size spare if that makes a difference

Now it is wound up fully, I can't actually remember seeing it that high before, but my memory might be failing!

I fitted a spare wheel protector the day I got my car last year. I thought I'd wound the winch back up afterwards, but noticed it dangling a few days later. Wound it up some more and again found it dangling a few days later. Neither time was serious, maybe half and inch. Has stayed secure since. Maybe the dealer didn't quite wind it up properly?

And get a spare wheel protector before you regret not doing it.

..one reason it may have 'dangled' is that someone has indeed tried to steal it - by winding the wheel so that the cable starts to unravel. Apparently if you do not winch your wheel tight enough to the underside of the vehicle and it can be moved about, even slightly then a thief can 'unwind' the cable (which is after all many strands of metal twisted together) and thus the wheel which eventually will snap the cable or loosen it enough to free the wheel whether there's a protector there or not.

Learnt that today, thankfully not the hard way.

Get a protector and ensure your wheel is tight to the underside of the car.

Thumbs Up

the adblue one on ours does jam sometimes and has to be wriggled to get it to the top..if it jams part
way up and you think that's it and then it unjams down the road that could easily happen

When I fitted my wheel protector a couple of months or so ago I remembered the comments made before about the wheel dropping shortly after fitting by another forum member.

I can see how this can happen as when I wound it back up I carefully watched the winch cable join and it snagged a number of times in the housing.

So - after winding and adjusting the winch cable join in the process to ensure it slides up where its meant to go its been fine since! - no after fit adjustment has been necessary Thumbs Up

Am paranoid i am going to get this problem. A couple of weeks ago i swapped all my wheels and dropped the spare. When it came to raising i back up i spent around 10 mins winding the nut to find the spare had lifted about an inch from the ground and wouldn't lift anymore. the only way i could get it to winch up was to take the weight of the wheel then wind it a bit and keep doing that until it was fully raised. There is no obvious damage to the cable or winch so I guess there is some sort of clutch mechanism in the winch that stops it overtighteneing and i think mine is slipping??

Everytime i go out to the car i kick the spare to see if its come loose but it has stayed put upto now Thumbs Up but i think i am going to have to get a new winch
