Connecting Battery - Coming loose |
|
Hello,
Bit of a silly question coming up..
I had to disconnect and charge up our D3 battery due to it dying a car park.
Anyway, I've since reconnected the battery at the car works fine. However the negative terminal has a habit of coming loose. I know that the battery connection is tapered.
Is there a particular trick to tightening the bolts, or do I just need some extra muscle?
Thanks!

Ah that would make sense.
I'll loosen them up and give them a tap.
Thanks

Really really common to see loose battery connections.
The problem is, that when you normally tap them down, they can still sit high up.
The reason being, that the clamp is not opened up enough. Even though you have undone the post, it won't always open.
When you have undone the nut, look at the clamp and there is a split at the end. Put a small screwdriver or 'suitable tool" in there to prise the glamp apart.
Then tap it down whilst it's slightly apart, remove screwdriver and tighten bolt. Makes a huge difference and can sometimes cure random errors if they are very loose. Bodsys Brake Bible

AA diagnosed a duff battery on my D3 when it wouldn't start, got a new one and when I went to change it, found the negative connection loose. Nothing wrong with the battery at all. I kick myself for not checking it in the first place.

Loose Battery Cable Tamper |
|
Well just realized that the Auto parts dude placed the felt pads underneath my battery cables when I replaced it as regular maintenance. Cold Cranking amps were down, and summer is coming.
Well I will pull those off tomorrow as I am having a loose negative cable codes and charging in general, issues although the alternator is putiing out over 14.5
So do not place the felt pads under your cables, or it may cause issues, well those were free, as a promotion, so as the old Adage goes, Land Rover nothing is free,...or you will actually break it. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

Supposedly corrosion protection. Been around for years in the states.
ones red and ones green, so you know which is which not that it matters.
I assume there is some type of material in/on them that helps kep corrosion down? I think its one of those myths, that have been passed down. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

I was having a problem with terminals not being tight, the bolt was stripped from being over tight. Made a new one and now just tap the terminal down a bit first and snug the nut down.

My negative clamp had a crack in it, when pushed down and fully tightened you could still turn it.
I replaced the battery as i thought the terminal on the battery had worn but the new one was only just a little better. I have now replaced the negative lead and it tightens up solid. Andrew
