Help with Route Plan - UK to Gibraltar

Hey guys,

I am after some help planning a route through Spain to celebrate my 30th...

In short, I have books a Ferry Portsmouth - Santander for June. I have two weeks over there. We have a place right down south by Gib. We plan to take our Desert Wolf Trailer and D4 Landmark and travel across Spain in 6 Days to get down.

Just wondering if anyone has has done a similar route before? Any known hot spots? Suggestions on any Green laning? Campsites?

I am traveling with SWMBO and 1 and 2 year old so would like to keep the legs short on the way down.

Thoughts, ideas and suggestions on routes welcomed! Thumbs Up

Nice views out of santander as you leave over the Pyrenees i used to do it but i did it in one trip anywhere between 12-1 hours but my kids were not that small Madrid can be a nightmare if you hit it at the wrong time but as long as you skirt the outside then usually ok Thumbs Up

Try the App for ACSI sites in Spain.

Myself & SWMBO used this for our 2 weeks down through France, Andorra & Spain. Also finds campsites closest to you and worked a treat for us.

I belive if you join for a small fee you get fairly decent discounts too Thumbs Up

I have done the trip a few times now and always steered clear of Madrid. It can be done in one go (600m approx) but I usually stop every two hours and coffee! It is usually a super driving experience no matter which route and it never fails to make me wonder how I put up with UK motorways. So many great places to stop off and explore. Burgos, Vittoria, Salamanca, Seville. I am too old now to get excited about the vistas but some are stunning.....approaching Salamanca heading south for me was a wow moment and there are plenty of others.

I suspect with little ones the sightseeing maybe less of a draw, I don't do camping but know there are plenty of expansive service areas. Also just remember Spanish cities and towns are generally "old" style narrow or confined and I imagine can be taxing if towing.

Finally, it will be hot so always carry plenty of water and have shade. I am sure whichever route you will enjoy the experience.

If I was travelling between Santander and Gib I wouldn't be going anywhere near Madrid.

Madrid is way off track!

I did this trip in two days on the road, some years ago in an MGA via:-

Palencia
Salamanca
Caceres
Seville

a total of 520 miles, en route.

We went off route at Salamanca to stay at Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel & Spa:-

Highly recommended - but get a "deal" otherwise very expensive.

Hello,
I show you the route that I would follow, they are approximately 750 miles in total, 12 hours of one pull that you do not want, and about 20 euros of toll (if you are interested I will dig you exactly where you have tolls in case you want to avoid them) I propose to you is a combination of the Cantabrico motorway, which is parallel to the sea from Santander to the west to Gijon (A to B the first 150 miles), with wonderful and green Atlantic landscapes next to the Cantabrian Sea, stopping in a small coastal village called Llanes (that is my land Asturias) a lot of sea at the foot of high mountains (peaks of Europe) you can do camping there, mu good traditional food, fresh fish and natural cider from our own apples (the star fruit of the province of Asturias) I can recommend something if you want, and surely you will not want to go to Gibraltar Laughing . You will then continue through Gijon (I live there) to Oviedo, less than 100 miles, and second stop, is small city where Alonso was born Whistle , old town and gothic cathedral (also preromanico art) if you want You can take the south by the motorway of high mountain (motorway of the Huerna) that you rise to the plateau of Castile and you leave the Atlantic area of Spain to enter in the Castilian plateau of great extensions plain and quite uninhabited ... I do not extend because Maybe you are not interested .. but summary ... you will follow what is called "route of the silver" ( B to C ) all highway until Cadiz. You pass through León, Salamanca, Caceres, Merida, Seville, Cadiz and Gibraltar (UK) all stops bound for their beauty, almost new highway, no tolls and little traffic. Forget about Madrid, you will leave it aside for hundreds of kilometers and enjoy a magnificent trip.

If you like this plan I will tell you any details you need
regards

Then the route

Ruben, that looks a lovely route. Will do this at some point in the future. Have driven via France before, Irun, Burgos, Madrid etc. etc. but your route will certainly be nicer if you have the time. Thumbs Up

I have done it several times via Madrid and Via Seville. Seville is my preference but both are interesting in parts. Above information should sort you. Thumbs Up

PS: Going around Madrid is really not that bad and surprisingly Mountainous.
