Direct Line have never charged me for changing to winter tyres. I only object to having to phone them twice a year to tell them. They said "all modifications" have to be notified.

So when does a modification become a modification? I have placed a Disco4.com sticker and a lifeboat sticker on my rear windows. I have changed my reversing light bulbs to make them brighter. I have fitted a dashcam, enabled remote FBH, fitted a roof rack + various other changes. Do all of these have to be reported. What do other members tell their insurance company?

I'm with Privilege and if I had the same things that you have fitted, I would have to tell them in case it makes a material difference to the vehicle. In the event of a claim, the Loss Adjuster will be looking for anything that will mitigate the insurer's liability.

I never considered telling my insurance that I had winter tyres on. They are the correct size and load rating for the car. I wouldn't tell them if I changed the tyres for a different tread pattern any other time.

Some insurers will penalise if you deviate from OEM stipulated tyres or in the case of winter tyres they believe that you may put yourself at higher risk or in situations where you are exposed to others who may not be able to retain control in snowy \ icy conditions.

Here is a 11/2016 ABI list of insurers who care or not

From that list, it's only E-Car, Southern Rock & Swift Cover who need to be informed.

Makes for a good talking point. Ive fitted 'steps', aux driving lamps and an RAI, will declare properly at renewal. Someone has a letter from LR stating that the compomotives are manufacturer approved, can't remember what thread though.
D4.5 Facelift, Lazer ST4, Prospeed underbody and rack, IID BT, Compomotive/BFG KO2, Series MFlaps, RAI, Dog Gd+XBB, Alive Tuned, T-Max/YellowTop, RemoteFBH, GlassesMod, WheelWinchMod, Jack Mod, LED Mods, Seized Crank Mod....
