Low Fuel Level warning erratic |
|
Something has been wrong with my fuel gauge since I got the car - my wife had the car down to SIXTEEN miles left and the light still didn't come on, and I just assumed the bulb was out or something. But yesterday, with just under half a tank of fuel, the Low Level light lit up along with the appropriate audible warning, and the fuel gauge dropped instantly from half to nothing. Turned the car off and back on again, and the level resumed at the correct half a tank. It did the same thing today, with 3/4 full tank, and again turning it off and restarting 'cured' it.
Any ideas?

Yep, I've had similar problems since new. The dealer has put new sensor, new this new that and no difference. Most commonly it jumps from almost at the warning level to (erroneously) saying empty.

Faulty sender unit - quite common
You may be lucky and it's just the wiring that is causing the issue but most likely the sender.
It will only get worse to the point where it will constantly read no fuel.
Do you have any warranty?

I had the same thing when I first bought my disco turned out to be a faulty sender unit needed the tank taking off , cost about 250 in all but likely I bought mine from a person who honoured the work on the car.

Had similar with mine last week but the gauge seems quite accurate. The fuel warning in mine doesn't come on until around 8-12 mile range , my range rover used to warn me when i got down to about 40-50 mile range
bit of a waste having a range warning when it lets you run so low before warning
