priming the engine/oil pump with oil (discovery 3 tdv6)

Hello, can anybody tell me if there is a procedure to prime the engine and/or oil pump with oil.
I've just refitted a replacement engine and fitted a new oil pump etc. I'm concerned that there will be no oil pressure for a fair few seconds on initial start up

i realized after posting that I've posted this in the wrong part of the forum but have no idea how to move it Rolling Eyes

OK

Only my thoughts....maybe wrong
If you've just swapped the oil pump....
& there is a full dose of oil in the dump...maybe replaced on this repair (dipstick check)
You have a fresh oil filter...
Turning the engine over will prime the pump & establish pressure (oli pressure light goes out.....a few seconds....max)
The residual oil in it the bearings (bottom end, top end, crank shaft mains, camshafts etc) will be enough to provide the first few seconds lubrication same as any start.....the pistons in the cylinder bores are splash / mist lubricated anyway...so OK.
The difference here is the few seconds it takes for the pump to establish "suction" from its flooded suction port & create pressure (its a positive displacement pump)....once it got oil in it will deliver a positive oil pressure.
You've got to be eagle eyed & ensure the oil pressure light actually goes out.....if it doesn't Stop cranking the engine or stop the engine if it's fired up.
You may find that a few repeated starts will establish pressure.....indicated by the oil pressure light
 BREXIT - done properly.

If it has been rebuilt, then should have been rebuilt using special oil/grease on all bearings and pistons smeared with oil etc.

If not, remove the connectors on all 6 injectors and turn the engine over on the starter until oil light goes out.
Should be good to go from there.

It will not start emediatly, the fuel system has to be primed by cranking the engine, this is sufficient to start the oil circulating, just don't Rev the engine when it starts until the oil light goes out, even then only with care.
Hope that is all you have to worry about, good luck Thumbs Up

ah what it is,
i've gone down the jaguar route as a replacement engine so i've had all the sump off etc and its been drained of oil for a couple of weeks. there is no oil at all in the engine. i'm just concerned about the initial start up as we all know the bottom ends are sensitive.
i think unplugging the injectors is probably a good call.
