Oh flip

I've just realised my cars MOT ran out on the 20th Dec.

I have the date of Jan 17th written in my diary, in my phone calendar, in my house calendar and also have a txt message reminder set up so I wouldn't forget it.

I saw this morning the car flashed up it needed a service, so I just went though the paperwork to see what it had done last time and spotted the MOT certificate with the expiry date 20th December 2016 Also is an MOT certificate with the expiry date 17 Jan.... 2016. Embarassed
I thought the Jan one was the current one and kind of forgot about the year changing soon.

No idea why the MOT has such a short date on it though.

So now I'm kinda screwed as my place isn't open until the 4th Jan. Censored

Guess I'll park it up and get the disco 2 off the driveway for a bit.

I find that very strange, if it was MOT'd on Jan 17th it should expire Jan 16th 2017. We have been digital now for a few years so the dates should be set automatically even if it's MOT'd within the 1 month early period?

Have you checked online here ;

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

or

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

If you wanted the history.

You never know it might be wrong on the print out - this data is what is made avaiable to the boys in blue and other agencies.

Perhaps worth a check ?

EDIT - Too slow !!!

The database is the one that the boys in blue use.

No idea why the printout is wrong !!! Shocked

My MOT certificate has a different date printed on it, to that on the DVLA/.Gov checker

The centre said that it was likely caused if the system was down, or having issues, and the online date is the correct date of expiry. Worth checking, just in case Thumbs Up

The paper copy is wrong, there's been an issue a few times around New Year with dates that get printed out, I have the same thing with an old Jag a few years back. If the online system says Jan 2017, then Jan 2017 it is!

Just thought.

If the system was down (ie not online to the central system) then it might default to one year from the date of the test as it wouldn't know your anniversary date (in January)

You would however be entitled (as I understand it) to keep a year from the original pass date (the one in January). You can do this up to one month in advance I think.

Just an idea !! would sort of make sense (perhaps !!).

Most odd. I was sure it was the 17th, and I was most perplexed when I saw the document saying the 20th.
I've had a few health issues recently, part of which has been memory loss and confusion, and that really didn't help the situation. Laughing

It was defo done in December, like an early Christmas present to myself that had the potential to go so horribly wrong. No risk no reweard Laughing

Also, pretty sure there were two advisories on the paper work, but it was a while ago.

Tom,
if the original expiry date was Jan 17th it should have added the extra on when you MOT'd on the 20th December. My guess is the paper part is wrong and the computer is right. Looks like you'll still be ok until the 17th.

That only happens if you supply the test center with the original paper copy. If you have a car that is four years old and the MOT runs out on the 20th of month you can go into a test center get an MOT done and month early and providing it passes they will issue a 13 month MOT certificate.

You no longer need the paper copy to keep the anniversary date.
I had the same thing in October 2016. The MOT lost a month. Rang DVLA up and was told that they had changed systems and had some problems.

Hah, I was thinking the opposite, save up all my Xmas money just incase it goes horribly wrong.

I'm going to book it in next week anyway. The MOT place uses the computer date, so they should set the expiry for 17th Jan 2018.
It had one advisory last time, free play in steering rack knuckles, so we'll see if that gets picked up again.
My MOT place doesn't do repairs, so they have no need to make stuff up, so whatever actually needs doing will get picked up, I just hope it's not too much!

If it passes, I'm going to treat it to a full service and gearbox flush. If it doesn't pass I'll treat it to a load of repairs and a service Laughing
